YouTube TV Expands Multiview to Android Phones, Tablets

The move follows the rollout of the multiview function on Apple mobile devices in March.

YouTube TV has panted its flag as the dominant force in the live TV streaming market. With over 8 million subscribers, YouTube TV is the biggest virtual distributor of cable channels on the market, and has more customers than any cable/satellite company outside of Comcast, Charter Communications and DIRECTV. One of the most popular features on YouTube TV is its multiview feature, which allows sports fans to watch between two and four live games from select leagues simultaneously on a split-screen display. This week, the streamer announced that multiview was rolling out for even more devices, allowing customers to use the function either at home or on-the-go.

Key Details:

  • YouTube TV announced on social media that it now offers multiview on Android smart phones and tablets.
  • The streamer allowed Apple phone and tablet owners to begin using multiview in March.
  • Viewers can now swap games in and out of their multiview window to customize their lineup.

The multiview function was first available only to customers on smart TVs and desktop platforms, but it has steadily expanded the number of devices that can use the feature. The rollout has now come to Android mobile phones and tablets, as announced by YouTube TV on X (the social media platform once known as Twitter) on Thursday.

The launch of the multiview feature for Android mobile devices follows its release on IOS phones and tablets. Apple devices first got access to multiview in March, right before the 2024 Men’s and Women’s March Madness tournaments started.

Audiences used to be stuck with a pre-selected list of game combinations to choose from when multiview first launched. Now, however, fans can swap games in and out of pre-set bundles to fully customize their multiview experience. As of now, multiview is only available to watch with college basketball and NBA League Pass, which will return when the 2024-25 NBA regular season begins.

Does YouTube TV Have Any Other Recent Updates?

YouTube TV is well known for continually tinkering with its user interface and features to create an optimal customer viewing experience. In late April, the streamer began reintroducing the option to toggle its 1080p Enhanced resolution on and off for select live channels, after removing the toggle in February.

YouTube TV also launched a redesign for customers’ library of recordings in April. Early customer reactions to the new layout were almost universally negative, and if viewers continue to hate the new library YouTube TV may decide to change it again.

YouTube TV didn’t grow to the size it currently enjoys by being inattentive to its customers’ wants. That explains why the service is rolling out its multiview function to a new family of devices, and why it continues to tweak and perfect the streamer in hopes of boosting engagement and attracting even more loyal subscribers.
