Breaking the Waves is a 1996 drama directed by Lars von Trier. Set in a strict religious community in Scotland, the film follows the story of a young woman, Bess, who marries an oil-rig worker, Jan. Bess is deeply in love with Jan, but their marriage quickly takes a turn for the worse when Jan is seriously injured in an accident and is paralyzed from the neck down. Jan urges Bess to have affairs in order to provide him with a source of vicarious pleasure, which she reluctantly agrees to do in order to remain close to him. As she begins to explore the world outside her sheltered upbringing, Bess's actions revolt her community and threaten her relationship with Jan. Ultimately, Bess's journey of self-discovery leads her to an understanding of the power of love and sacrifice.

Jules and Jim is a romantic drama film, directed by François Truffaut, and released in 1962. Despite their mutual affection for her, the men’s friendship is tested when they both fall in love with Catherine, and the trio’s lives take an unexpected turn. Through their story, Truffaut examines the consequences of an unconventional relationship, and the changing role of women in society. With its unconventional narrative, brilliant cinematography and unforgettable performances, Jules and Jim has been hailed as one of Truffaut’s greatest achievements.

The Cuckoo is a 2002 Russian war drama written and directed by Aleksandr Rogozhkin. Set during WWII, the film follows the story of two Finnish soldiers, one a pacifist, the other a hardened veteran. After escaping from a Soviet prison camp, the two men stumble into a remote village in Lapland, inhabited by a small group of Lapps. While their presence causes tension in the community, the two soldiers ultimately help the villagers survive the harsh winter conditions. As the story progresses, the two men also form an unlikely friendship, as the pacifist helps the veteran confront his own inner demons. Ultimately, the film highlights the power of friendship and human solidarity in the face of war and tragedy.
