Anyone with a dog knows how difficult it can be to keep the couch clean. Luckily, there are many couch covers for dogs that can protect your couch from pet-related damage and keep your living room looking put-together. When looking for a couch cover, consider your needs and how you’ll use it. If you’re hoping to preserve your couch and protect it from stains, accidents, and dirt, consider one with a waterproof or water-resistant backing. Alternatively, if your dog is prone to scratching and digging, seek out a cover that’s made from a thick and tightly woven fabric.
Another consideration is aesthetics: Do you want a couch cover that fits snugly onto each cushion, or are you looking for a more laid-back look? All in all, the best couch covers for dogs combine the right materials, fit, ease of maintenance, and aesthetics to protect and revamp your couch for years to come.
The FUNNYFUZZY Delicate Waffle Chenille Fabric Furniture Protector Couch Cover is our best overall pick because it combines durability with aesthetics and more than likely will cover all the surface area of your couch. Coming in a range of sizes, these couch covers can be purchased as full sets for one-, two-, and three-seat sofas, but you can also buy singular pieces to expand coverage or accommodate oddly shaped sectionals. The largest set for a three-seat couch, for example, fits couches up to 83 inches wide. If your couch is larger than that, you’ll want to stock up on a few extra pieces.
We particularly like this couch cover because it’s made from a soft chenille fabric and there are rubber beads on the back of each piece that prevent the cover from shifting and sliding. Plus, it comes in four different neutral colors. Even though the synthetic material makes it less breathable than a cover made with natural fibers, the tight weave is resistant to scratches and protects the couch underneath from small spills and accidents as long as you promptly catch them.
Specs
List Price:
$130.68 (One Seat Set) to $210.54 (Three Seat Set)
Dimensions:
35.43 in. L x 35.43 in. W (seat and back) and 27.56 in. L x 27.56 in. W (arm covers) (One Seat Set) to 82.68 in. L x 35.43 in. W (seat) with 27.56 in. L x 27.56 in. W (back) and 27.56 in. L x 27.56 in. W (arm covers) (Three Seat Set)
The Easy-Going 100% Waterproof Couch Cover, available in 15 colors, is the most affordable couch cover on our list at around $30. (The price varies by color on Amazon.) This cover is quick to put on as well, as the stretchy polyester and spandex material and elastic trim fit over your couch in one piece like a fitted bed sheet. However, the simple shape can lead to a more rumpled appearance, and, while the brand suggests tucking loose fabric between the cushions of your couch, you’ll likely need to regularly readjust the cover to achieve a more fitted look.
This cover can be tossed in the washing machine on a cold cycle when it needs a refresh – just be sure to hang it to dry so as not to damage the waterproof layer. While it eliminates the dryer as an option, the waterproof backing on this cover is especially helpful for puppies still being trained or older dogs prone to accidents. Plus, it’s even a great safeguard for kids or adults who might spill things on the couch. Keep in mind, however, that this cover is made from polyester; while it’s highly durable, it’s not as breathable as a cover made from natural fibers like cotton or linen.
Specs
List Price:
$29.99 (Sofa in black) to $62.99 (Oversized Sofa in light gray)
Dimensions:
35 in. D x 59 in. W x 33 in. H (Loveseat) to 35 in. D x 91 in. W x 33 in. H (Oversized Sofa)
Orvis is known for its high-quality fishing and outdoor gear, but it also makes thoughtfully designed dog beds, accessories, and couch covers. The tightly woven microfiber material that makes up the Orvis Grip-Tight Furniture Protector is purposefully made to resist clawing and digging, but it’s soft enough to lounge on without a second thought. This cover also has a rubberized backing and weighted flaps that keep it in place while your dog jumps on and off, making your couch less likely to appear “unmade.” It comes in only three colors, but the neutral beige and gray can coordinate with a variety of couches and homes.
While it comes in three different sizes to accommodate a loveseat, a sofa up to 70 inches wide, and a sofa up to 86 inches wide, it’s not the best option for a sectional since Orvis doesn’t sell individual pieces to cover multiple sections. That said, this cover is great for preventing accidents and spills from seeping through to your couch thanks to the water-resistant membrane. However, it’s not waterproof, so be sure to remove it and toss it in the wash soon after a spill.
Specs
List Price:
$198 (Loveseat) to $298 (XL Sofa)
Dimensions:
26 in. D x 55 in. W (Loveseat) to 26 in. D x 86 in. W (XL Sofa)
While not technically a couch cover, the Paw.com PupProtector Waterproof Throw Blanket is a solid (and cozy) option for draping over the couch to protect your investment and provide a furry place for your dog to snuggle up on. Because it’s rated as waterproof, you can rest assured that any puppy accidents won’t make it through to your couch or bed. Plus, it’s machine-washable and can be tumble-dried on a low-heat setting, so it’s one of the easiest options on our list to clean. It’s not made specifically to fit over entire couches, but the large size can cover furniture up to 80 inches long, so most smaller couches, loveseats, and armchairs would be fully swathed in the soft, waterproof faux fur.
This blanket comes in 15 different colors and patterns including trendy cowhides and cheetah print, so it looks less like a couch cover and more like a high-quality faux fur throw you'd drape across the sofa anyway. Plus, you can move the blanket from couch to bed if needed and utilize it as a regular blanket or to cover the seats of your car. Some reviewers do mention that it sheds for the first few washes, so keep a lint roller on hand in the beginning.

For a laid-back vibe, a couch cover like the DREAMINGO Pet Couch Protector couldn’t be easier to set up. Since it’s basically an oversized blanket, all you need to do is lay it over your couch – no fussing with zippers or ties – and you’ve got a fresh new look and an added layer of protection. The flip side of this simple construction is that it’s likely to shift and slide during use, but if you’re not opposed to some readjusting here and there, we love this cover for a casual vibe.
This cover comes in several different patterns and finishes like minimal tan and cream stripes and traditional floral motifs with fringe around the edges. Plus, it’s available in multiple sizes to fit couches up to 150 inches wide. Since the cover is made from polyester, it’s soft, durable, and weighty, but it’s not as breathable as one made from a natural material. That said, it’s super simple to clean in the wash, and it’s reversible to change up the pattern or hide set-in spots.

The best couch covers for dogs are ones that offer protection from liquids and claws, are comfortable for extended lounging, and fit your aesthetic. If you’re hoping to protect your couch from spills and puppy accidents, we recommend a waterproof or water-resistant model. If you want to protect your couch from digging and clawing, we suggest a durable model. If you’re seeking a custom fit or an aesthetically pleasing cover that combines all these features, we recommend the FUNNYFUZZY Delicate Waffle Chenille Fabric Furniture Protector Couch Cover.
Materials: When looking for a couch cover that’s going to both protect your couch and be cozy enough to lounge on, there are a handful of materials and constructions that make the most sense. According to Sean Cormier, chair of the textile development and marketing department at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology and former director of textile quality at SureFit, the main thing to look for in pet products is durability. For this, he recommends polyester or heavy cotton canvas as the best material options, and if you’re looking for something less expensive, polyester is the way to go.
Tight, heavy polyester weaves are highly durable – read: less prone to ripping due to rambunctious dogs – but if you want a polyester fabric that resists stains, Cormier says to look for antimicrobial fabrics that have a stain-repellent coating. If you want a natural, more breathable material, Cormier suggests a heavy-duty cotton canvas with a weight comparable to thick denim.
For couch covers that protect against spills and accidents, look for covers that have a waterproof or water-resistant backing or membrane. These will allow liquids to pool on the surface and not seep through to the couch, but bear in mind that you’ll need to clean up any liquids before they drip onto the floor.
Ease of Maintenance: Machine-washing is by far the easiest way to clean fabrics that have been dirtied or moistened by your pets. Some couch covers can also be tumble-dried on a low-heat setting, but to preserve the shape and size of any material, we recommend a cold wash cycle and laying it flat or hanging it to dry.
In general, clean your couch cover as often as you would your bed sheets, throw pillow covers, or blankets – every one or two weeks – with your standard laundry detergent and fabric softener. If you need extra odor-fighting power, throw a cup of distilled white vinegar in the wash with your couch cover and launder as usual.
Fit: There is a range of fits available for couch covers, from totally custom pieces that zip onto each cushion to oversized blankets that drape over the entirety of the couch. As to which fit is best, it comes down to personal preference. If you tend to be frustrated by frequent readjusting or a more rumpled appearance, we recommend a couch cover that snugly fits over the entire couch or each cushion. Some of the covers employ a skid-resistant backing on the backside of the fabric to prevent slipping and sliding, while others remain in place thanks strictly to a snug fit and an elastic bottom.
Aesthetics: Since the couch is often a major focal point of your living room, aesthetics certainly factor in when choosing a cover. Luckily, there are plenty of stylish options on the market that also protect your couch from spills, scratches, and accidents. Custom options are your best bet when it comes to looks because they’ll fit snugly and properly over the entire couch or onto individual cushions and will more likely look like a new couch, appearing less rumpled.
That said, if your home’s vibe is more laid back, a tie-on slipcover or an oversized blanket is your best bet. If your cover slips on over the whole couch, you can also define seats and cushions with slipcover holders that keep the fabric in place.
To determine the most important qualities of couch covers for dogs, we consulted Sean Cormier, a textile engineer, the former director of textile quality at SureFit (which manufactures pet-proof couch covers), and the chair of the textile development and marketing department at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology. With his insight and our research in mind, we combed through the most popular and highest-rated couch covers available, looking for ones that combine superior protection from pet damage, soft and comfortable materials, and, ideally, good looks. We included options in a range of prices and styles to meet your individual needs.

Our contributors and editors have years of experience researching, testing, and reviewing products. Caroline Mullen is a writer and editor with more than five years of experience testing and reviewing products. Her work has been featured in a number of publications, including Forbes, Real Simple, The Strategist, and Apartment Therapy. She also has a rambunctious (and messy) French bulldog and a white couch, so effective couch covers are a particular point of passion.
When it comes to pet products, Cormier, a textile engineer, reminds us that the durability of the fabric is the most important factor to consider. What’s more, if you hope to protect your couch from pet urine or messy paw prints, you should prioritize covers that have a waterproof or water-resistant backing to prevent liquids from seeping through onto your couch.
The most effective materials for couch covers to resist the wear and tear caused by dogs are very tightly woven as opposed to something with a loose weave like tweed or boucle. Polyester, linen, and cotton are all great materials to look for when considering durability because they’re both comfortable to lounge on and, depending on how they’re woven or if they’re finished with a stain-repellant coating, can be exceptionally stain-resistant and easy to clean. Look for fabrics marked with high rub counts (30,000 or more) or labeled as “performance” fabrics, as these will hold up to frequent use.
It can be extremely frustrating and time-consuming to keep a couch clean when you have pets, especially dogs who get their paws dirty outside, love to dig and scratch, and generally stink up the couch. A couch cover is far and away much easier to clean than the couch itself since many covers can be machine-washed (and couches often don’t have removable covers and need to be cleaned with an upholstery cleaner). What’s more, a couch cover can hide any damage underneath and make your couch look like new again if your pet has already done a number on it.
