ROBERT S MCCLENAGHAN Jr.

McClenaghan, Lieutenant Colonel Robert Smith Jr. died January 30, 2012 at the age of 88. He was preceded in death by his wife Georgiana Jane Post McClenaghan; his father, Colonel Robert Smith McClenaghan; mother, Gertrude Joy Seabrook; brothers, William A. McClenaghan, John Douglas McClenaghan, Donald Scott McClenaghan and Richard Lee McClenaghan; son, Thomas Stephen McClenaghan; & daughter, Sara Ann McClenaghan Lowes. He is survived by his son, Christopher Robert McClenaghan; daughter, Eliza Jane McClenaghan (Frank David Moruzzi); daughter-in-law, Jamie Jolene Bailey (formerly Jolene McClenaghan) (Andrew Bailey); son-in-law, Mark Edwin Lowes; grandchildren, Steven McClenaghan (Laura Andrijeski McClenaghan), Daniel McClenaghan, Sara Lowes, Alexander McClenaghan, Matthew Lowes, & Cassandra McClenaghan; great-grandchild Wesley McClenaghan; & sister-in-law Mary Lou McClenaghan. He was born September 19, 1923 in Fort Sam Houston, TX; Robert was a graduate of Oregon State University & a member of the national fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta. As a combat infantryman with the 350th Regiment, 88th Infantry Division, Colonel McClenaghan served in Italy during World War II & with the 32nd Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division in Korea 1951-1952.He served as a general staff officer in the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, Operations J31, 1964-1965 & a liaison operations officer from I Field Forces, Vietnam to the Republic of Korea Forces, Vietnam 1969-1970. Colonel McClenaghan was a graduate & instructor at the US Army Infantry School & a graduate and instructor at the US Army Command & General Staff College. Among his awards & citations are the Legion of Merit; Bronze Star, with Valor Device & two Oak Leaf Clusters; Purple Heart; Joint Service Commendation Medal; Meritorious Service Medal, Commendation Ribbon with metal pendant, Combat Infantryman Badge 2nd Award, Parachute Badge; Expert Infantryman Badge & several campaign ribbons, unit citations & battle stars. From 1960-1963 Colonel McClenaghan was a professor of military science at Castle Heights Military Academy. At the time of his retirement in 1977, from 35 years of active duty, he served as the deputy senior army advisor to the Tennessee National Guard & was awarded the Tennessee National Guard Distinguished Service Ribbon. A lifelong athlete & avid golfer, Robert enjoyed serving as a Volunteer Rules Official with the Tennessee Golf Association. As a member of Temple Hills Club he made two holes-in-one in 2004. While stationed at Fort Leavenworth, KS, he coached the base’s American Legion Baseball team. Robert was a devoted churchman, friend, & communicant of Christ Church Cathedral for over 30 years. He held many offices—licensed Lay Reader, Eucharistic Minister—& served a term as a member of the Vestry. His impact on individual lives & the welfare of the community cannot be overestimated. He will be remembered for his commitment to his Church & his family, his compassion, & his unique sense of humor. Robert had an amazing ability to make everyone feel welcome and at ease. He will be missed. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Greater Southeast Affiliate, American Heart Association, PO Box 840962, Dallas, TX 75284 or for Heart Failure Research in the Cardiovascular Division at Vanderbilt Medical Center, 1211 Medical Center Drive, Nashville, TN 37232. Memorial Services for Robert & Georgiana McClenaghan will be held on Saturday, February 25th at 3pm at Christ Church Cathedral, 900 Broadway, Nashville, TN.

Lieutenant Colonel McClenaghan will be sorely missed by all that knew him. I worked at Capitol Chevrolet for many years and "The Colonel" would always make sure he saw and talked to me each time he was there. May God bless you're family in their time of sorrow.
