Kakamega Teacher Builds Modern Urinals for His Pupils after Raising Funds Online

Teacher O'kubasu Malik from Kakamega has finally completed constructing washrooms for young boys who used to squeeze beside an old toilet to relieve themselves.

Malik O'kubasu says fundraising wasn't smooth

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, Malik shared that the new block of urinals has been tried and tested.

"The facility can accommodate 26 learners concomitantly," said Malik.

"Hence this curbs time wastage during short calls of nature besides dignifying the boychild," he added.

The dedicated teacher says the cost of the washroom was about KSh 61,000 and he got the money through fundraising online.

"The fundraising wasn't as smooth as usual since I did it at a time when the economy is tough, and most altruists are also going through financial constraints. On my side, I also didn't do enough publicity for the project. That's why I couldn't raise enough to paint the walls and make them waterproof," he said.

Modern toilets in place of ruins

"I believe in being an instrument of change without inclinations, not because I'm expecting anything in return but because it's the right thing to do. However, if someday a higher office or power comes, I'll take it because then again, I'll get to help more people," he added.

When the pupils went home for the holidays, they left ruins, but when they returned on opening day, they found their washrooms bigger and more presentable.

"I've never seen boys this excited. I could try to express their happiness but words would fail me, for each phrase would be an understatement," said teacher Malik.

Malik takes 3 former pupils to Form One

In another story, teacher Malik fundraised and ensured that three students who were stranded without fees joined school.

Malik raised money from friends and family members on his social media platforms and accounted for the money received, complete with receipts.

The three girls joined Emalindi Girls' High School and Ibinzo Girls Secondary School in Western Kenya.
