Beautiful vistas in every direction. Don't even ponder, just do it. Snow capped and glacial mountains, clear and clean water, even occasional wildlife thrown in.

Located 18 km northeast of the Ushuaia city centre, the Laguna Esmerelda trailhead is a dirt parking lot on Highway 3 able to accommodate about 40 cars. Bus service to and from the trailhead is available from a handful of local transport providers in the city’s outdoor bus station on Av. Maipu, and the normal procedure is to purchase a round trip ticket (which at the time of this review was 15,000 ARP). Buses marked with each company’s name run hourly, and although one is expected to use the same company to return, it appears that a return ride with a competitor is possible, if needed. The trail itself consists of two parts: a well-marked, but very muddy forest walk, and open, rocky terrain with lovely mountain views. Elevation gain is modest, and the trail is not technical. The lake is a lovely greenish-blue and sits a bowl fringed by rugged, multi-coloured mountains where traces of a now-receding glacier can be seen. There is substantial shoreline where one can picnic. Although four hours is recommended, one can easily finish in three. The day we hiked there was someone selling drinks and snacks from the back of a truck in the parking lot. Suitable walking footwear is recommended for the rocks and the mud.

    Spectacular views on Finis Terra.
Take a taxi, hike 3-5 hours, bring snacks.
Great before embarking on sea expedition.
    Just do it.

Short queues (even in high season) and very good snow quality compared to other ski centers in Argentina.

After lots of research, we decided to go with a private taxi driver with L&M Ushuaia Taxis and what a good decision it was. Half the price of a tour, and the driver was English speaking and took us to all the relevant tourist places in Tierre del Fuego including Bahia Lapataia which was nice but other places were better and not so many tourist buses!

We have been very lucky to see many things in the world. Our Patagonia trip was also a great experience traveling from Barilochte to Ushuaia capped off by our day trip to Martillo island to walk among the Gentoo and Magellanic penguins. We had seen the worlds smallest penguins in the Galapagos but this was a much more moving experience. It is 7 - 8 hours in total but it is not to be missed if you are in this part of the world.

This is a surprisingly large museum for a city like Ushuaia. It is hosted in the former prison, and each wing of the prison is a different museum: Antarctica, exploration, flora, fauna, history, etc.

World worth a visit, even if you came to Ushuaia for hiking and outdoor activities.
