MONK Creator Shares Hopes for ‘Another Chapter’

By Movieguide® Contributor

MONK’s creator recently teased a potential new “chapter” in the character’s story following last year’s movie.

The popular TV show ended in 2009, but creator Andy Breckman shared that he continued to think up ideas for the detective, played by Tony Shalhoub. Nothing really worked out until the pandemic “nudged things along for us,” Breckman said.

Shalhoub and his wife made a short video depicting Monk’s lockdown experience. The audience response showed studios there was still a market for MONK, which led to 2023’s MR. MONK’S LAST CASE.

Shalhoub said it was “a bit daunting” to return to the role but added, “Andy came up with this great script and there was such positive energy from Peacock. Everybody was excited to revisit it. By the time we got to shooting on the first day, we were revved up. It didn’t take long to fall back in.”

There are no plans in place for another movie or show, but Breckman shared that he was game to “explore another chapter,” joking, “This is my retirement plan.”

Shalhoub also revealed he would be up for another movie, telling Entertainment Weekly, “I never say never. I would not be opposed to that, if that’s a possibility. But you’d have to ask the writers and the network. That’s not up to me.”

They’re not the only ones who have hope for another installment in the MONK saga—NPR’s review of MR. MONK’S LAST CASE called the movie “TV comfort food,” adding, “The title of this new Peacock movie is MR. MONK’S LAST CASE—but given how well its ingredients fold together, I wouldn’t necessarily take that title literally.”

Movieguide® previously reported on MR. MONK’S LAST CASE:

The story of TV serial detective Adrian Monk continues in MR. MONK’S LAST CASE: A MONK MOVIE.

“We’re so delighted to have made a movie version of Monk, and we are thrilled that every one of our stars were so enthusiastic about coming back,” said Breckman, Hoberman and Zisk in a statement. “But in coming back, we wanted to do a film that was worthy of our legacy. MR. MONK’S LAST CASE is a story that is powerful, emotional, funny, heartwarming, and has something to say about the human condition. And it will be both familiar and surprising.”

The new case finds the detective up against a self-centered billionaire, Rick Eden. Monk’s wife’s daughter from an affair, Molly, is supposed to get married when something happens to her fiancé.

“When people ask me what the original series was about, I always say it was about loss,” Breckman said. “It was Monk dealing with the loss of his beloved wife, Trudy. And that, of course, we solved in the series finale. But the movie presents Monk with an equally emotional challenge that he has to step up and address. We found a way to raise the stakes yet again for this poor guy.”
