Burg Kreuzenstein - Leobendorf, Austria - Built by the Counts of Formbach 12th c. - Possession of Habsburgs 1278 - Purposely damaged by Lennart Torstensson, Count of Ortala 1645 - Remodeled by architect Carl Gangolf Kayser for Count Johann Nepomuk Wilczek 1874 - Never conquered - Open to the Public
They filmed an episode of the Witcher season 1 here too. It’s really impressive up close too, definitely worth the trip if in Vienna.
Are there any good photos of the sculpted pieces that appear on the pinnacles or parapets? These look very interesting (as is this entire photo). Need more of this one
Well, "never conquered" is technically correct but a bit misleading. It was surrendered without resistance to the Swedes during the Thirty Years' War for lack of manpower.
Wow. Works of architecture like this are astonishing. I want to learn more about castles and old architecture but know basically nothing right now. Is there certain different styles of architecture or different types of castle visuals? Like would you be able to look at this castle and say “oh this castle is in X style and is most likely from X region”? Like for example gothic architecture? Basically my main point is I know there’s different types of castles and architecture but I’m trying to find out which ones are which.
Yes and no. Certain regions or countries do have particular styles, mostly in their keeps, towers or roofs, although these styles change over time as well as the needs and owners of the castle change. Many have been rebuilt or remodeled multiple times. Castles don't really follow architecture norms, especially medieval ones which are often described as gothic. Moving into more modern times, architectural styles do come into play, especially in the UK. Gothic Revival, Tudor, Victorian, Scottish Baronial are a few. If you browse r/castles regularly you'll get a better idea and will probably be able to recognize generally where a castle is located by its appearance, but not always. Nobles and royals from one country will visit another then copy something they saw that they liked. And then there are "mock" castles built by wealthy "commoners" just for their style and status, quite common in the UK and US. I'm no authority but hope this helps.
Keep in mind that this castle was built (technically rebuilt with some parts of the old castle) between 1874 and 1906. It' basically a rich man's fantasy castle "cobbled" together from different parts.
If you’re trying to learn more, you could try checking out Shadiversity’s playlist about castles. He has some really good videos about castles and how they changed throughout history.
