Leslie (Andrea Riseborough) is a West Texas single mother struggling to provide for her son (Owen Teague) when she wins the lottery and a chance at a good life. But a few short years later the money is gone and Leslie is on her own, living hard and fast at the bottom of a bottle as she runs from the world of heartbreak she left behind. With her charm running out and with nowhere to go, Leslie is forced to return home to her former friends Nancy and Dutch (Allison Janney, Stephen Root). Unwelcome and unwanted by those she wronged, it's a lonely motel clerk named Sweeney (Marc Maron) who takes a chance when no one else will. Where to begin... about such an astonishingly endearing yet difficult performance from Andrea Riseborough. I haven't seen an actress (or actor) carry a movie like this in ages... Effortlessly displaying tons of range, sometimes in a single scene. Inhabiting a character in a way that finds us pulling for her, even at her very worst. I, for one, can't wait for her acceptance speech!

a riotous gem of a film! this little independent film never got its rightful recognition from all the awards ceremonies with the exception of the academy awards and rightly so. andrea riseborough is absolutely mesmerising as a mother struggling to save herself from a lifelong addiction with alcohol. it is this struggle along with her character's determination to rehabilitate herself primarily driven by her love for her son that enables riseborough to fully disappear into the role and allow the audience to believe in her pain and struggles and to secretly cheer her on toward a better future. a phenomenal performance by andrea riseborough.
