Thewlis was born David Wheeler in Blackpool on 20 March 1963. His parents are Maureen and Alec Raymond Wheeler.
His father’s shop employed both of his parents. He has a younger and an elder sibling. He played lead guitar for the punk rock band Door 66 and the rock band QED while still a teen.
He attended Highfield High School in the Marton section of Blackpool. Later, he enrolled in the London Guildhall School of Music and Drama, from where he received his degree in 1984.
In Naked (1993; directed by Mike Leigh), Thewlis made his breakthrough performance as Johnny, the film’s title character and a homeless, brilliant, resentful, rambling street philosopher.
For this role, Thewlis won awards from the National Society of Film Critics (United States), the London Film Critics Circle, the Evening Standard, the New York Film Critics’ Circle, and the Cannes Film Festival for Best Actor.
He co-starred with Helen Mirren and Ciarán Hinds in Prime Suspect 3 that same year as the sexual predator James Jackson. Prior to it, he had his first appearance on television in Valentine Park.
Thewlis’ Wife and Children
Sara Sugarman, a Welsh actress, and Thewlis were married from 1992 until their divorce in 1994. After that, he briefly dated English actress Kate Hardie from 2001 to late 2010, he was dating English actress Anna Friel.
On July 9, 2005, they welcomed Gracie, who went on to become an actress. On August 5, 2016, Thewlis wed French fashion designer Hermine Poitou. The couple currently reside in Berkshire’s Sunningdale.
