Following the release of Ryan Murphy’s spectacular and big-hearted musical The Prom, Netflix invited everyone to the celebratory streaming event ‘THE PROM: TONIGHT BELONGS TO YOU’ on Saturday, December 19. The evening brought all the Zazz – and can be seen in full on Netflix’s YouTube channel.
Queer Eye star and Host Jonathan Van Ness kicked off the evening with an opening monologue and then passed the mic to headlining musical guest Janelle Monáe, who performed hits such as ‘Crazy, Classic, Life’, ‘Make Me Feel’, Tightrope’ and a rendition of the iconic Prince song ‘Let’s Go Crazy’.
Following this, Ryan Murphy and the cast of The Prom spoke about what the film means to them and the importance of representation on screen. The new @most video ‘Night of 1000 Meryls‘ then took center stage with 11 world famous drag queens transforming into Meryl Streep’s award-winning catalog of characters for a show-stopping performance of “It’s Not About Me”.
In addition to custom content from top LGBTQ influencers, actors and YouTube creatorssuch as Fortune Feimster, Charlie Gillespie, The Fitness Marshall, Tarek Ali, Jo Franco and more, the evening culminated in a killer DJ rave-a-thon set from Galantis, giving all viewers the prom that they truly deserve.
Director Ryan Murphy and stars Jo Ellen Pellman and Ariana DeBose also further introduced the Unruly Hearts Initiative, born out of their collaboration on The Prom. Announced on November 30 on Ryan Murphy’s Instagram, the Unruly Hearts Initiative is for anyone who is driven to get help or inspired to be a good ally. The initiative connects young audiences with trusted organizations that advocate for the LGBTQ+ community and youth through resources for housing insecurity solutions, mental health, mentorship and professional development.

Dee Dee Allen (three-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep) and Barry Glickman (Tony Award winnerJames Corden) are New York City stage stars with a crisis on their hands: their expensive new Broadway show is a major flop that has suddenly flatlined their careers. Meanwhile, in small-town Indiana, high school student Emma Nolan (newcomer Jo Ellen Pellman) is experiencing a very different kind of heartbreak: despite the support of the high school principal (Keegan-Michael Key), the head of the PTA (Kerry Washington) has banned her from attending the prom with her girlfriend, Alyssa (Ariana DeBose). When Dee Dee and Barry decide that Emma’s predicament is the perfect cause to help resurrect their public images, they hit the road with Angie (Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman) and Trent (Andrew Rannells), another pair of cynical actors looking for a professional lift. But when their self-absorbed celebrity activism unexpectedly backfires, the foursome find their own lives upended as they rally to give Emma a night where she can truly celebrate who she is.
