Prayer is a Powerful Weapon

The family-friendly movie explores the transformational role prayer plays in the lives of the Jordan family. Tony and Elizabeth Jordan, a middle-class couple who seemingly have it all – great jobs, a beautiful daughter, their dream home. But appearances can be deceiving. In reality, the Jordan’s marriage has become a war zone and their daughter is collateral damage. With the help of Miss Clara, an older, wiser woman, Elizabeth discovers she can start fighting for her family instead of against them. Through a newly energized faith, Elizabeth and Tony’s real enemy doesn’t have a prayer.

Let's talk about Christian films.
No, really. This seems like an immediate repellent for many, but let's be thematically objective (since, artistically, it is impossible).
Thematically, the film will appeal ideologically to some and will put others into disagreement. That is natural. The Kendricks are as free as anyone to state their personal beliefs and strive for them. However, what happens when you hear about names like Kendrick, God's Not Dead and its seemingly unnamable sequel, Kirk Cameron, the Left Behind trilogy, Fireproof and the like? What do you think of?

b) Awful cinematography
c) Weird editing and pacing choices
d) Racism
e) Terrible writing
f) Bias
g) Woeful special effects
h) Clichés
i) Deus Ex-Machina machinations…

The military metaphor in the title turns out to be apt, since this feels like nothing so much as a gung-ho, conveniently-ignore-the-difficult-part recruitment video. Christian auteurs Alex and Stephen Kendrick tell the story of Elizabeth (Priscilla C. Shirer), a real-estate agent struggling with an unhappy marriage to her husband, Tony (T.C. Stallings)—until a new client, widow Clara Williams (Karen Abercrombie), becomes her spiritual advisor. It’s initially refreshing to find an affluent African-American family in the protagonist role, and there’s merit to the self-healing that comes from spiritual practice. But structurally, the movie is a mess, building to so many different endings it really should’ve been called The Return of the King of Kings. And even more troubling is the mix…

As the only non-religious member of my otherwise Christian (and, in my dad’s case, Jewish) family, reviewing—or even watching—faith-based movies has proven to be a bit of a challenge. I’ve never shied away from expressing my honest opinions about pieces of media I see, but in the case of films like these, it can be a little tougher. So agreeing to watch and review War Room (which my mom had been wanting me to see for a while) is a bit of a gamble, but as a form of personal catharsis, it’s well worth it. Also, it’s easily one of the worst faith-based movies I’ve ever seen, so that makes venting my frustrations with Christian cinema a lot easier.

I was pretty much raised on the Kendrick Brothers' films, and have always been partial to them personally. So, when critiquing a film such as this, which is so clearly targeted towards a specific audience (Christians with the prayer of spreading the gospel to non-believers), I have a sort of soft spot for them. The Kendrick brothers are marvelously talented Christian filmmakers, with a knack of sending their message in the most cinematically family-friendly way possible. The 7 PM Thursday (i.e., night before official Friday release) crowd for War Room was about 40 strong and totally into it; there was a lot of whopping, cheering, "amen"-ing at appropriate moments throughout (like when the heroine repudiates Satan from her suburban doorstep), etc. You rarely get an audience that's that unforcedly happy to be there, for what it's worth. Since this was my second "faith-based" (i.e., evangelical Christian — the term falsely implies movies are also being made for Jews, Muslims, etc.) release of the year, I was particularly looking forward to the solid block of Christian trailers shown beforehand. War Room is yet another Christian movie that has such good intentions, but falls into the same cliches as all the others, and has some pretty bad writing. Besides Karen Abercrombie, the performances are pretty bad, and some of the attempts at humor fall completely flat. But despite all of that, Karen Abercrombie gives a pretty good performance, and the message was great, and something very important. It isn't a particularly boring movie either, it's just very cliche, and really poorly written. There are definitely better Christian movies out there, but I will say this is no where near the worst one I've seen or anything.
