Wuthering Waves release date

Wuthering Waves released on Wednesday, May 22, 2024 for PC, iOS, and Android. The servers went live at 7pm PT / 10pm ET / 3am BST /4am CET / 12pm AEST.

The Wuthering Waves PC release date was announced in a special broadcast program on YouTube in March 2024. Since the livestream’s publication, a listing for the game appeared on the Epic Games Store, allowing players to launch it directly from the storefront alongside the official launcher. There is currently no way to launch it via Steam, meaning it isn’t natively compatible with the Steam Deck at this time.

Wuthering Waves will be arriving on console at a later date, though this is yet to be determined. Kuro Games told The Loadout that the studio is “still working on it” in a GDC interview. This follows a presentation at Unreal Fest Shanghai 2023 that claimed Wuthering Waves would release on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. While there’s no word about it coming to Xbox Series X|S consoles, we can’t rule it out just yet.

Wuthering Waves trailers

The Wuthering Waves Opening Cinematics trailer depicts protagonist Rover being cast through space by a mysterious goddess. They soon awaken in a body of water and, during the Global Launch trailer, are under suspicion of being a Threnodian – an enemy of mankind.

Most of the other trailers introduce the Wuthering Waves roster, from the chilly sword-wielder Sanhua to the devious gunslinger Aalto. More recently, we saw trailers showing newer characters: the graceful Danjin easily handling some marauding bandits and the resourceful Jianxin taking down a bear that guards an ingredient needed to create a special tea.

Mortefi, one of the Wuthering Waves Resonators, hangs suspended in the air moments before he unleashed a plume of fire upon a group of nearby enemies.

Wuthering Waves gameplay

Kuro Games lifted the lid on its combat system in a GDC interview with PCGamesN shortly before launch, saying that Wuthering Waves offers “a more refreshing take on the genre” that goes beyond a “Genshin Impact clone.” Characters perform flashy moves to take down robotic enemies in a vast open world, as traditional hack-and-slash combo breakers collide with team-switching mechanics in other gacha games.

You can also use the environment to gain an advantage in combat, getting the jump on unsuspecting foes and slashing them with their blades. The ability to read and counter enemy attacks is available “from the get-go,” allowing even level five characters to take down much stronger enemies with enough skill. We also saw perfect dodging and the use of grappling hooks to avoid danger.

Your party consists of up to three different characters, but only one can be on the battlefield at any given time. Each one is winnable via the gacha system, so the key is to mix and match the roster together and create a team capable of unleashing huge amounts of damage onto unsuspecting foes.

The other key mechanic in Wuthering Waves is monster catching. When you defeat an enemy, they occasionally leave behind an echo of their former self. You can convert your favorite Echoes into artifacts to boost a character’s stats and unlock unique abilities to use in combat.

Naturally, Wuthering Waves comes with a gamut of classic gacha game mechanics to keep you coming back for more. You need to farm materials to upgrade and level your Resonators and Echoes, while limited-time banners allow you to pull new characters and weapons.
