Do you believe Santa needs a backstory? Sorry, but Klaus breaks the mold while the movie industry has left many of us with poor taste in films that try to reveal the backstories of well-loved characters. This gorgeous animated film, set in the made-up town of Smeerensburg, revolves around Jesper (Jason Schwartzman), a spoiled postman who becomes friends with the toymaker Klaus (voiced by J.K. Simmons). Older audiences will enjoy veteran performers like Joan Cusack and the late Norm Macdonald.

Jason Schwartzman’s character Jesper, the worst student at the postal academy, is sent to a frozen island above the Arctic Circle where the rival locals hardly ever communicate, much less write letters. Just when Jesper is ready to give up, he meets Klaus, an enigmatic carpenter who lives alone in a cabin full of handcrafted toys, and he finds support from Alva, a local teacher (Rashida Jones).

Strange friendships like these bring laughter to Smeerensburg and leave a new legacy of thoughtfully hung stockings by the fireplace, kind neighbors, and enchanted stories. Animated Christmas comedy KLAUS, which co-wrote Despicable Me with Sergio Pablos, stars Rashida Jones, Jason Schwartzman, and JK Simmons.

Though William’s story sounds like a middle school project, he loses his learning before planning a windmill power generator to address his people’s problems. Still, this could be an inspiring story for science-enthusiastic children.

It is worth noting that William Kamkwamba comes from Malawi, which is an African country. His village experienced a devastating drought when he was 14 years old. People had nothing to eat. In the last few years, we got enough of Pinocchio’s revival to start wondering why Guillermo del Toro finds such a thing a good idea now. But in a way, Toro’s madness would be perfectly suited to Pinocchio. His stop-motion restyling of Carlo Collodi’s original story is one whacky musical full of strange twists and turns on Pinocchio’s quest to be seen as nothing less than a real boy.

He revives Carno Colldio’s story of a puppet named Geppetto who becomes alive to heal Woodman. The fantastic stop-motion musical comedy directed by Guillermo Del Tora and Mark Gustafson involves the young protagonist’s misbehavior and obstinate nature as he travels to find himself a home.

Family-friendly animated Netflix original films are often CGI and neon, so we were shocked to see that Richard Linklater was helming their most amazing movie since. This time, Linklater is using his love of rotoscope animation to try to capture what it was like to grow up during the space race. The movie alternates between the perspectives of the astronauts and mission control crew during the momentous first landing on the Moon, and Stan, a little child who dreams of traveling to space.

Two overlapping perspectives on the 1969 summer lunar landing. Along with the seldom-seen bottom-up perspective of what it was like for a happy youngster who lived close to NASA but mostly watched it on TV with hundreds of millions of other people, it portrays the momentous occasion from the viewpoints of the astronaut and mission control. Not every family can attend a performance by the Royal Shakespeare Company, and not every child is reared by parents who value their education. Now, let’s speak about Netflix’s latest rendition of Matilda the Musical, a novel by Roald Dahl. Widely praised for strong performances across the board (Lashana Lynch and Emma Thomson were outstanding, as predicted, and newcomer Alisha Weir is amazing), this movie proves that Netflix can produce some of the finest family films ever. And kudos to author Dennis Kelly and director Matthew Warchus for adding the right amount of risk and peril to the mix.

Alisha Weir’s character, Matilda Wormwood, is a little child with intense curiosity, a keen intellect, and a lively imagination, not to mention the worst parents ever. She likes to drown herself in the pages of her favorite books while her parents, Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough, satisfy themselves with trashy TV and dubious money-making enterprises. She observes quietly from a distance, conjuring up little schemes of retaliation and rebellion when they are boisterous, self-centered, and cruel. Enola Holmes is a fun and energetic mystery perfect for families to enjoy. Millie Bobby Brown from Stranger Things is starring in the movie, which mixes vintage sensibilities with contemporary ideas. Enola is indeed a member of the Holmes family. Her brothers Mycroft (Sam Clafin) and Sherlock (Henry Cavill) are unsure how to interpret their younger sister’s unusually free-spirited behavior for her period.

Brown is excellent in part, combining the humor that breaks the fourth wall that seems exclusive to mature female characters like Fleabag. Apart from a few battle sequences involving knives and weapons, parents shouldn’t be concerned about the program being overly mature. For films set in a different historical period, see our list of the top Presidents Day films. Enola Holmes 2 will arrive soon as well!
