The Big Sick meets Dad is Fat in this funny and heartfelt New York Times bestselling memoir from writer, director, wife, and mother, Jeannie Gaffigan, as she reflects on the life-changing impact of her battle with a pear-sized brain tumor.

In 2017, Jeannie's life came to a crashing halt when she was diagnosed with a life-threatening brain tumor. As the mother of 5 kids -- 6 if you include her husband -- sat in the neurosurgery department in star-covered sweats too whimsical for the seriousness of the situation, all she could think was "Am I going to die?"

Thankfully, Jeannie and her family were able to survive their time of crisis, and now she is sharing her deeply personal journey through this miraculous story: the challenging conversations she had with her children; how she came to terms with feeling powerless and ferociously crabby while bedridden and unable to eat for a month; and how she ultimately learned, re-learned and re re-learned to be more present in life.

With sincerity and hilarity, Jeannie invites you into her heart (and brain) during this trying time, emphasizing the importance of family, faith and humor as keys to her recovery and leading a more fulfilling life.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Jeannie Gaffigan is an infinitely touching and personable writer, and her charm and force-of-nature persona saturate each page." America Magazine

"A surprisingly hilarious story about surviving a brain tumor...her accessible writing style and honest voice create an intoxicating spell as she writes tenderly of learning the importance of living in the moment. Readers will be uplifted by Gaffigan's perseverance and outlook."―
Publishers Weekly

"Funny, endearing...[readers] will love Gaffigan's optimism, humor, and fascinating fight to reclaim her life...a fun blend of celebrity, mom, and medical memoir rolled into one."―
Booklist

"Jeannie Gaffigan's indomitable spirit leaps off the pages in this moving, intimate, and (against all odds) funny memoir about one of the most trying times of her life. WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU PEARS is full of wisdom, inspiration, and resilience. Don't miss it."―
Harlan Coben, New York Times bestselling author

"Behind every truly funny man is an even funnier woman. Which is why, after learning that she has a pear-shaped brain tumor, comedy writer Jeannie Gaffigan is perhaps the most perfect person to take the horrible thing and write about it with signature humor, wit, and sarcasm. From discovery to recovery, this story about surviving a medical crisis (and five kids) has you rocketing through every human emotion from gratitude to grief, but most of all it has you laughing and nodding your head at her wry and comedic take on life. Throw in a big helping of faith (yes, the God kind), irreverence, and universal parenting truths and you've got a must-read memoir that reminds all of us what' s important. This is a book to be shared with all."
Lee Woodruff, New York Times bestselling author and journalist

"I've known Jeannie for a long time and it's no surprise that she turns the terror of a brain tumor into a hilarious and heartwarming tale."―
Tony Hale, Emmy-winning actor and comedian (Arrested Development, VEEP, Toy Story 4)

"After reading Jeannie Gaffigan's moving, funny, and inspiring story, I have one only wish: I want her and Jim to adopt me. I mean, at this point, what's another kid? It's not like they'd notice."―
Mo Rocca, author of Mobituaries: Great Lives Worth Reliving

About the Author

Jeannie Gaffigan is a director, producer, and comedy writer. She co-wrote seven comedy specials with her husband Jim Gaffigan, the last four of which received Grammy nominations. Jeannie was the head writer and executive producer of the critically acclaimed The Jim Gaffigan Show, which was loosely based on her and Jim's life. She collaborated with Jim on the two New York Times bestsellers, Dad is Fat and Food: A Love Story. Jeannie, with the help of her two eldest children and some other crazy moms, created The Imagine Society Inc., a not for profit organization that connects youth-led service groups. Most impressively, she grew a tumor on her brain stem roughly the size of pear.

Jeannie presently lives in New York City with her five children, which feels more like six children if you include her husband Jim.

Best book I have ever read! This is exactly what I needed to read during this crazy pandemic as it is so inspiring and even super applicable to what we are going through right now. What an uplifting story of struggle and hope. Turn off the news and read this instead and hopefully like me your anxiety will melt away because there is so much you can take from her experience and wisdom and apply it to what we are going through now. Jeannie is an amazing writer, deep, honest, and downright HILARIOUS!!!!! I bought this book for my mom and an aunt (who actually herself had a brain tumor) to read but I also planned to sneakily read it myself before I gifted it to them ;) So glad I did! Well not that I had a choice because as soon as I started reading I couldn't put it down. I love how she shared her faith, the good, the bad, and the ugly and even if you are not a believer you will still love this book because she shares in such an approachable and nonjudgemental way. I cannot say enough good things about this book it also just makes me want to move to NYC and be one of Jeannie's BFFs she just seems so darn fun. Jeannie please write another book or start a blog or podcast I need more of this in my life!! ~Marlene

As I read this book I found myself being able to relate to Jeannie on so many levels. Her desire to bring herself and her family closer to God and bring her children to mass is something as busy humans we struggle with daily. I am a full time nurse and mother of 4 and pray often that I am raising my children the way that God wishes. She is transparent with her struggles and adds humor to the story as she tells it! I appreciate her willingness to be open about her family struggles and am inspired to put down my never-ending list of chores and spend more time with my children. I highlighted sections of the book so that I can keep myself on track and to remind me of what is truly important in life! Thank you for sharing your life with the world Jeannie I am so glad I had the opportunity to read your book!

Overall really enjoyed it. Starts very slow in my opinion but don’t want to ruin anything. Just know it gets better as you go along. It did bother me that she Is a Christian yet says “Oh my God” throughout the book. That is taking Gods name in vein. Other than that, I thought it was well written and my heart went out to her and what she went through. I think women will enjoy her persceptive more than men but I did enjoy it and I am a man.

This book is a great read. First catapults the reader into a difficult health situation which inevitably we or someone we love will be faced with. Next it reminds us of God's presence and how he's using ever situation to get our attention. Jaannie Gaffigan will have you laughing and nodding your head throughout her own personal story. We all need this book!

Only Jeannie Gaffigan, wife of comedian Jim Gaffigan, could write about a near death experience with a brain tumor and make it funny. There's plenty of drama as well, but she is the epitome of "laugh or you'll cry".

I found this incredible story to be inspiring, heartwarming, and amusing. I'm concurrently reading Jim's book Dad is Fat. They are an amazing couple and the voice coming through from both books reflects their unity in all things Gaffigan. Five Stars

Loved the blend of the reality of a life-changing
illness and faith mixed with humor.
An especially good read for parents of young children!

I love Jeannie's honesty, love and perseverance. I had brain tumors. I found it oddly comforting that our experiences were so much alike. From how much to tell the children to a world N turned upside down to the strength of a family to get through this. I cried, I laughed, I feared and I cheered; sometimes all on the same page. For me this book was very therapeutic from letting others to step in to realizing how faith is important in these times. This book is a very true to life look at brain tumor and recovery. Jeannie Gaffigan is a wonderful story teller.

A tender, honest and humbling story of how one incredibly smart, strong and sassy woman overcame a life or death challenge, while managing a funny famous husband and 5 young children. A beautiful story of faith, family and the true value of life. Loved it!

What would we do without people who can make us laugh? Especially as we cope with tough times. Jeannie Gaffigan opens the veil ( or should I say cranium?) into one of the most challenging times in her and her family’s life. We get to know the comedic duo in light of the discovery and consequent removal of her brain tumor. Part spiritual insight, deep personal reflection, and laugh out loud medical trauma memoir. I appreciated her honesty in sharing the challenges of navigating life post surgery. Behind this funny man (Jim Gaffigan) is a very talented and funny woman without whom this world would be one sad hot pocket.
