(Count of Saxony) (1696–1750) Marshal of France and one of the best known military theorists of his age. He was an illegitimate son of Augustus II the Strong, and was half-German and half-Swedish. In the War of the Austrian Succession he won a series of victories, including Fontenoy, and gained control of most of the Austrian Netherlands, which strengthened France's position at the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle (1748).
