Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.
This 2 cd set is the definitive anthology of mid career Mark Murphy who did a long stint on the wonderful jazz label Muse , long since defunct . Both the Savoy and 32Jazz labels have reissued the Muse material. Savoy has a one CD set which is quite good but the 32 Jazz 2-cd set is really the one to get if you are into Murphy's eclectic presentations. A lot if not all of this material is out of print and not on digital either which is a shame but grab this if you can because this album is becoming rare,,,,,opt for the Savoy if price is an issue.
Like the other reviewers said, a GREAT collection---very thoughtfully selected, arranged, and annotated by long time jazz vocal dj Michael Bourne(it was the first of four double CD's he put together from the Muse records years). Unmentioned in the above reviews is that each of the 2 discs are "themed". The second is titled "mark, jack, and jazz" and it compiles--in addition to really swinging "jazz related" numbers, all the mark-reads-kerouac things from the two muse records, "bop for kerouac" and "kerouac, then and now" . Will Freidwald in his knowing and glowing profile of MM from his "A Biographical Guide to the Great Jazz and Pop Singers" 2010 says (though he recommends the original issues), "The four kerouac pieces may well be the most moving things Murphy ever recorded". No small praise. And right on. Well worth seeking even at the premium price it now commands.
I have this cd - it's very good, but what cd of Mark Murphy is NOT good?! I especially like Disc 2, which has a bunch of my favorites on it - even the Ballad of the Sad Young Men, which you can hardly ever find.
