Double Files Are they just mirrored images?

I'm on a Surface Book3, Win11 (Home) Ver23H2, 32G RAM, 64-bit Operating System, Google Chrome.

My issue happened after I installed One Drive. After I had installed it, I noticed that my file explorer/structure had changed. In Explorer, there are doubles of folders that were created after I installed One Drive. I don't know if these doubles are separate files (copies) or if they're just mirror images of the original files or if they're shortcuts. Because they follow the sequence in which the original ones (or at least one set) are in, I can't tell the path (address) of these copies, which is why I don't know if it's a mirror image, a copy, or a shortcut.

The copies aren't in a completely different location on the hard drive, but a few folders down, so I can't understand why or what significance they have other than taking up space.

Has this happened to anyone else? Why would One Drive create copies of folders/files? Do these copies take up space? Are they safe to delete? What function does it serve?

I've included a screenshot with arrows indicating the copies and their positions. As you can see, they're the exact same folders, but if they were copies how come they don't have the "(1)" signifier that's assigned to files that are named the same or else they'd be written over?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi,Alex in Sox

Thanks for using Microsoft products and posting in the community.

I've analyzed your description and in order to better pinpoint the problem, I suggest you log in to the OneDrive web side and see if there are any instances of extra copies of files on your web side.If your web-side OneDrive view of files is fine, then it seems that you are experiencing a general problem with the OneDrive synchronization feature these days.This is due to internal updates and improvements to OneDrive, we are actively working on feedback through internal channels, this may recover on its own after some time, so I would recommend that you sync freshly after some time.

Under these circumstances, I suggest you perform a routine check by doing the following two steps,this may improve your situation:

  • Switch networks, such as connecting to a cell phone hotspot;

  • Change DNS;

  1. Press and hold win + Q and open the search box. Type ncpa.cpl

  2. Click the name of the network you connected to, open the Network Status window, click "Properties," and then double-click "TCP/IPv4 Protocol" in the Network Properties window.

  3. Manually configure the DNS server to "4.2.2.1" and "4.2.2.2", then click OK;

  • adjust Internet options;

  1. Hold down the Win + Q keys, open the search box, and type inetcpl.cpl.

  2. Open Internet Options, click Advanced, and check "Use SSL 3.0", "Use TLS 1.0", "Use TLS 1.1", "Use TLS 1.2".

Thank you for your time and patience on this issue.

Maybe your pinned folder icons are not showing. Pinned folders are just shortcuts to the folders and can be removed.

Try this:

Hi Arthur,

I tried your suggestions switching to mobile hotspot (my internet and cell providers are different), and I changed the DNS and Internet Options, but Explorer still shows the same thing.

I looked at the properties of both sets of folders and it appears that one set of "Documents, Music, Pictures" folders are mirror images of their original folders, but why would Win or OneDrive create the mirror image in the exact same directory?

Could it have something to do with the "Personal" folder that One Drive creates? I noticed that only the folders that I wanted OneDrive to backup/sync are in the "Personal" folder, and they're also the ones that have mirror images.

OneDrive online does not show duplicate folders.

Here's another odd thing that happened, when this issue came up, was that many of my files were duplicated, but left in the same folder as the originals. I posted a screen shot of two folders, one had picture files and the other had document files, and you can see where each file was copied. I don't know why that happened, but I read about it happening to others when installing OneDrive.

Here are two screen shots of files that were duplicated.

I'm a little hesitant to delete the "copy" files because I don't know if they're actually in use for OneDrive, or if whatever triggered the duplication might do the same thing if it sees only one set of files.

If you have heard about this strange duplication thing with the files and if there was any fix for it, let me know.

In the meantime, I'll just leave it alone until someone else or an update fixes it.

Hi Craig,

Thanks for the suggestion, but the pinned icons are there they just didn't show because the folder they're in wasn't expanded.

Right-click an empty area of the Navigation Pane in File Explorer and uncheck all the items you see in this image. You can re-enable them later.
