I RARELY WRITE REVIEWS, BUT I'M MAKING AN EXCEPTION
Received my collection today and was blown away! First, I didn't expect a coffee table edition. I like it! Pictures of Neil through the years, followed by six CDs in denim pocket holders. I just finished importing my favorites. Can't wait to load them onto my iPod, lay back and listen! I presently have 177 in my playlist with another under 150 to be loaded from albums with songs not included. When I'm finished, 320 total. This is a collection no Neil Diamond fan should be without. You won't be disappointed!!! ENJOY!!!

The puzzle of Neil Diamond
First of all, if you are a fan, the sixth CD makes it worth the purchase. It's all never released music, and there is so much good stuff here that I hesitate to give it only 3 stars.
I think all the years of songwriting rejection, combined with never being taken seriously by critics, clearly wounded Diamond. It made him grow the thickest skin, but in order to protect himself, he lost part of his soul. On the last song of the 5th CD, Hell Yeah, what he clearly sees as his My Way move, he famously tweeted that this song made his daughter cry, and he saw that as her recognizing it as a superior song. But the song is all about that two divorces and the pain that caused his children was worth it, because he got rich and famous. It's sad and a bit chilling that he doesn't recognize her tears for what they are.
When you get so much rejection, and the only person who says you will make it is yourself, you start to push through on stupid songs because pushing got you to where you are at. And although I love the melody and am enough of a fan to still have a soft place in my heart for it, I am I said is a pretty stupid song that could have moved from stupid to average with a few minor changes. My guess is at that point in his career, he was having so much success that no one ever said no, and the result is part of the reason the critics didn't take him seriously. On a compilation, the omissions become obvious, and sometimes it seems like the songs he loves the most took the most effort. I understand that, but if you look at the track listing for Hot August Night, Cherry Cherry and Sweet Caroline are almost hidden at the beginning of the concert. They were written rapidly and so he didn't take them seriously. It's a shame that he doesn't understand his own great songs are.
You really see that on the final disc. Oh Mary from 12 Songs is arguably the best song he has done in the last 25 years, and it doesn't make the cut. The historic duet with Brian Wilson doesn't make the cut, but the solo version does. This is a six disc CD that somehow omits several of his hits, which doesn't seem right at all. He has so much from Tennessee Moon but not the title track?
I though Melody Road had great music, and Seongah and Jimmy is my favorite song. At some point, when he gives control to someone else, we will get the compilation that truly hits all his greatness. This doesn't do it, but I still am glad I bought it.

Diamond is Forever!
This beautiful collectors’ edition did not disappoint! It is so impressive with photos and conversations with Neil Diamond. The book cover is gorgeous. I haven’t listened to the cd’s yet. Today I just sat down and the book. So good! It makes me sad thinking of him dealing with Parkinson’s. When this collection was being put together in 2018, he was still going strong.
I will update this after I have had a chance to listen to the cd’s. But so far, I’m thrilled.

Outstanding Compilation of Neil Diamond Songs
I bought this as a gift and I’m happy to say it was all that I had hoped it would be. The music is all the great songs of Neil Diamond spanning his career. The songs sound like the original arrangements, including live recordings. Excellent gift!
