vaccination

Hi we're planning a trip to Japan this summer and are deliberating about whether we need to get vaccinated against Japanese Encephalitis. We live in Denmark and the authorities here recommend vaccination for holiday travel outside Tokyo and Kyoto. As well as Tokyo and Kyoto (about 8-10 days in total), my partner and I are planning to go to Takayama and Hirayo Onsen + Kamikuchi for about 4 days in total) and then on to Hokkaido for 10 days where we're going to do a lot of walking/hiking ( in/around Shiraoi, Rishiri + Rebun Islands (2 nights transit in Wakkanai, before and after going to Rishiri island) and Asahidake Onsen/Daisetsuzan national park). Our adult children are coming with us for 10 days to Tokyo, Kyoto, Takayama and Hirayo/Kamikuchi and one of them is going on to the Hiroshima area for about a week. It would be great to hear what the recommendations are in your countries and whether you've been vaccinated in order to go to any of these areas. Thanks a lot for your help.

2. Re: vaccination

For the last 30+ years, there were only 3-10 cases per year of J. Encephalitis in Japan, a population of 125+ million. If that worries you, get a vaccine. It's quite painful and has side effects as well. I never recommend it to my patients who are going to Japan.
