Popcorn is a big deal for us at the movies. We LOVE LOVE LOVE The drive in movie theater. It’s so much fun and so much more comfortable to si in your own car. Come as you are in the family car!! This would have been a five star review except two things: the lot for screen 2 is rough to drive through and THE POPCORN IS GROSS. Everything else is amazing.

Two great movies for the price of one. Clear sound. Great family fun or date night activity. Two sets of movies to chose from. $9.50 per adult is a great deal for new releases .

Cheap price fun time. You get to see 2-3 movies for the price of one at another place. You can tune into the radio instead of using speakers. Only real con to the drive in is if the people next to you are loud.

The South Drive-in Flea Market is like a huge garage sale. It starts early, so make sure you don't dally & get there late. Vendors were already starting to pack up when we got there around 9:30! We found a few treasures to buy. It was our first time there, we will most likely go again.

On this weekday night, I was planning on taking my date out on the town and offered to take her to Pasqualone's Ristorante for authentic Italian (see my review) or Mitchell's Ocean Club for some great seafood (see my review); however, she said she wanted to relive her youth and insisted that instead we go to the South Drive-In Theaters. One of the real advantages of this drive-in was that you could bring in your own food. Asking what would she like to eat while we watched this double-feature at the drive-in, and she answered, "cold beer, fried chicken, and a large thick-crust pizza". From where we were, we took I-270 (the beltway) and got off at exit 52A and went North on US-23 (South High Street). Not far up the road we found the Great Southern Shopping Center which had a Kroger grocery store where I picked up several six-packs of bottled imported beer, a bag of ice, and a Styrofoam ice chest - one down. Fortunately for me it also had a KFC (see my review) and a Pizza Hut which was everything she wanted. We got a bucket of Original Recipe chicken and a classic, thick-crust Supreme pizza for pick up from an earlier phoned in order. We continued up South High Street (US-23) when we saw a Circle K gas station (see photo) and found the entrance and sign for the South Drive-In Theaters (see my photo) just beyond the Circle K gas station. If you see the South High Auto Wrecking sign (see my photo), then you have gone too far North, turn around and go back South.
My date gave me quite a history about the South Drive-In. It was built in 1950 by Leo Yassenoff who ran it until he sold it to his cousin Skip Yassenoff in 1971 who still runs it today. Skip soon remodelled the movie screen in 1972, but as luck would have it, that same year it was destroyed by a tornado. Since then it has been expanded to have two screens. The price is really great and they show current films as well as classics. Price of admission is only $7.50 from Sundays to Thursdays and only $9.50 on Fridays and Saturdays. Their rest rooms were clean but not fancy. They show three films a night, usually repeating the first film after the second, but occasionally showing three different films in a night. They have a web page for their listings and they do sell food which I hear will do in a pinch - I was told by a fellow patron that night, that their hot dogs and French fries are great for children but adults would probably rather bring in food - even home made popcorn (to save costs). One unique thing about this Drive-In is that they also run a Flea Market since 1972 which they call "200 yard sales and garage sales all in one great location". Every Saturday, Sunday, and Wednesday from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. (except during the Winter).
As for my date, fortunately she had a covered pick-up truck, so we threw in an air mattress, a few blankets, and some excellent lawn chairs. We backed the truck up to the screen, brought a battery powered FM radio to tune in the audio (some speakers are available but most just use their car's FM radio to hear the sound), lowered the tailgate and raised the back window. We started on the lawn chairs eating our food off the pick-up's tailgate and later moved into the back of the pick-up with the cooler of left over beer. We had a perfect view, great food and beer, and privacy as well. Oh yes, it was a great date. I highly recommend the South Drive-In for some Old School fun.
