NATIONAL BESTSELLER • Kathleen Buhle shares her story of resilience and self-discovery after her marriage to Hunter Biden unraveled in the wake of substance abuse and infidelity in this “dignified and revealing” (People) memoir.

“Kathleen Buhle’s brave and honest story transcends politics, division, hearsay, and judgment.”—Connie Britton

This is not a story about good versus evil. Or who was right. Or who was better. For decades, Kathleen Buhle chose to play the role of the good wife, beginning when, as a naïve young woman from a working-class family on the South Side of Chicago, she met the dashing son of a senator at the Jesuit Volunteer Corps in Oregon. Within months of falling in love, Kathleen found herself pregnant and engaged, living a life beyond anything she’d ever known.

Determined to build her family on a foundation of love, Kathleen was convinced her and Hunter’s commitment to each other could overcome any obstacle. But when Hunter’s drinking evolved into dependency, she was forced to learn how rapidly and irrevocably a marriage can fall apart under the merciless power of addiction. When the lies became insurmountable, Kathleen was forced to reckon with the compromises she had made to try to save her marriage. She wondered if she could survive on her own.

The result is a memoir that is page-turning and heart-breaking. Here Kathleen asks why she kept so much hidden—from her daughters and herself—for so many years, why she became dependent on one man, and why she was more faithful to a vow of secrecy than to her own truth. This inspiring chronicle of radical honesty and self-actualization speaks to women who have lost part of their identity and want to reclaim it.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Revealing . . . Kathleen Buhle is in a season of reinvention.”Katie Couric Media

“Kathleen Buhle’s brave and honest story transcends politics, division, hearsay, and judgment. It is a story of love and learning, of the crushing blow of co-dependency and addiction, and ultimately of Buhle’s journey back to herself.”
—Connie Britton

“From the safe harbor of a healing aftermath, Kathleen Buhle tells of the grievous toll that addiction took not just on her husband but also on her marriage and her family. She writes with warmth and kindness and without bitterness. As someone who has experienced firsthand the devastating hold of addiction, I find her account clear-eyed, painful, heartfelt, funny, and, best of all, hopeful.”
—Leslie Jordan, author of How Y’all Doing?: Misadventures and Mischief from a Life Well Lived

“It isn’t easy to write a book about marriage that acknowledges what hard work it is to love another person and, also, oneself. In
If We Break, Kathleen Buhle has done just that. The result is a harrowing tale of innocence and self-discovery, truth-telling and resilience. I couldn’t put it down.”—Kim Brooks, author of Small Animals: Parenthood in the Age of Fear

“In
If We Break, Kathleen Buhle writes clearly and courageously about her life and story. From a working-class family to the First Family, Buhle tells a story that will help others who have loved someone with an addiction recognize that addiction doesn’t discriminate and there is nothing anyone can do to cure an addict. That can only come from a choice the addict makes to change their life.”—Rita Wilson

I very much enjoyed this book and even living a bit vicarious through the author’s storytelling of her resilience, candour, wit and finding herself again after all the terrific highs and terrific lows of her married life.
Though the part that I found myself interested in the way she handled all the aspects that come with a family member deep in the throes of addiction!
For me, it was my brother, the Dad to my 2 beautiful, smart, talented niece, a master of creative sculpturing, a true consoler and next to my dad the guy I loved and admired for so many, many years!

It all seemed to change overnight! I wasn’t sure what was his tipping point and I followed him at family days at the 3 different rehabs he attended. When the wonderful man who raised my brother and me as a single divorced father died unexpectively…it left for me to bear the brunt of his addiction! Unfortunately he was found in his home dead from alcohol abuse. I so appreciated your sharing the struggles as you did in this thoroughly must-read book of a woman who came out the end a better person.
Highly recommend whether addiction is an issue in your life. With raw emotions she opens up about every aspect of her life. It is an important read!

Having come from a family with severe alcohol issues on both sides, I've seen many unhealthy behaviors of the addict, as well as the unhealthy behaviors of those that love the addict who are trying to "save" them. This is a raw, honest and well written book that documents the daily, hourly, battle to survive, for all involved. Many loved ones do get pulled in and don't recognize the escalation of their own dysfunction. The stress of having someone we love who is lost in addiction seems never ending. The constant worrying, navigating all the lies they tell, watching them take any measure to hide and continue their substance abuse, wondering where they are, if they're safe, the texting, the phone calls, the interventions, losing yourself and your own life in the repeating cycle of the addict. You are convinced you can and you try - but you can't "save" them. They must be an ACTIVE PARTICIPANT in their own recovery. It has to be their idea, taking their own steps, making the calls, keeping the appointments, going to therapy. I've spent years going through this with people I love and it is heartbreaking. It will take you down too if you don't continue to live your own life, set healthy boundaries and let the professionals do their part. There are support groups out there for loved ones. You've got to maintain boundaries for your own survival. No one sets out to be an addict. No one has that goal. Who would want to live like that? The substance abuse hijacks their brain, their personality, their life.

Addiction has casualties. Many marriages don't survive this, friendships are lost, families and finances torn apart.

I don't understand the science, the predisposition. I don't understand why some people can drink and never have an issue while others become substance abusers, and some severe substance abusers. There are many different theories.

There are many different programs and every addict is unique in that their DNA is unique. Don't give up. Please keep fighting for yourself. You are worthy of a wonderful life.

Prayers for everyone out there waging this war.

I cried reading this book, for all involved. Thank you Kathleen for sharing your story. This took guts. Prayers for you and your family. Prayers for your health and for your continued wellness journey.

Well written memoir of her life and both joyful and painful experiences. I had no interest in reading Hunter’s book before this but found Kathleen’s story so compelling, I find myself interested in this very human story. Frankly, could care less about their relationship to the Oval Office.

I don't have to agree with a person's personal decisions to like a book. I know what it is like to be married to an addict and to not know what the right answer is. I don't care if there was a ghost writer or not, the book is interesting in my opinion. It is honest, and can be used as a roadmap for others in her situation. Running,
good friends, therapy, seeking guidance, taking a breath and getting through the day you are in. If you decide to leave a marriage after so many years, you want to make sure you don't regret dissolving it later.
I also loved the heartwarming stories about Joe Biden and his kindness and generosity. She loved her husband, she had 3 kids to worry about, but she also loved his family. I think her children will have this also as a way to understand their mother. She did the best she could, and if she feels she made mistakes, well, we all wish we could undo things we said or omitted. I hope Kathleen finds peace.

I found this book almost impossible to put down even though I knew the ending. Kathleen Buhle writes with great ease and clarity. Almost as if she were talking to you. I liked her immensely but found I didn’t agree with all the put downs of herself. She tried so hard to make her marriage work. To help Hunter beat his addiction until she finally realised that he was just not the man he was and could never be again. She is fortunate that she has a lovely family, great children and loyal friends. Hunter was not good enough to be married to her. I am sure she will have a very bright future.

4.0 out of 5 stars Addiction and gaslighting
Reviewed in Canada on June 22, 2022
Interesting insights on addiction, gaslighting and the rage an addict sometimes feels when their partner tries to make them end their addiction. Creepy anecdote about Kathleen being given a letter for Joe Biden after her C- section and a massive hospital room upgrade! What I really wanted to hear about, though, was Hunter Biden's business dealings in Ukraine and his abandoned computer, pictures from which are all over the British tabloids.
