Biografía

  • Charli XCX is a singer-songwriter out of Cambridge, UK. She is well-known for her hedonistic brand of synth pop, which draws comparisons to the dark pop aesthetic of Zola Jesus, Siouxsie Sioux, Grimes and Danish singer-songwriter MØ.

Her youthful electro spirit draws influence from the Ed Banger crowd, most notably the sassy girl-rapper, Uffie, but also the smutty, crashing electro-funk of Justice and SebastiAn. Her bratty, rebellious edge owes itself to hip-hop influences, the likes of Eminem and Lil’ Wayne, while her sound is unmistakably pop, paying homage to the roots of the MTV generation, Britney and Christina Aguilera.

She recorded her unofficial debut, “14”, at the eponymous age of 14 with a loan from her parents and released her first tracks on Myspace, eventually getting her the recognition of a guy known as “Chas”, who ran illegal warehouse raves where she played her first gigs with the unconditional support of her parents.

She then got signed to Atlantic Records, and released her first official EP “You’re The One”, featuring the title single, which made the Billboard charts.

Her official debut full-length on Atlantic, “True Romance” (2013) – its namesake being the Tarantino-penned 1993 film with Christian Slater – blended the brooding gothic synth-pop of the 1980s with the recalcitrant, twee girl-pop of the 1990s.

Her latest, “Sucker” (2014) takes her sound in a more pop-punk, alternative direction, with nods to Weezer, The Hives, and The Ramones as inspirations. The album is also marked with a star-studded production team, including Norwegian DJ, Cashmere Cat, and Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmanglij.

Charli is the heralded co-writer of “I Love It”, which was to be Swedish duo Icona Pop’s breakout hit. She wrote it upon the request of the duo’s producer, who sent her some audio tracks. She scrawled the lyrics with a kind of hell-raising pop-punkness that well-befitted the duo. It got them a No.7 slot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart after featuring in an episode of US coming-of-age drama “Girls”. After the episode aired the track amassed a great number of digital downloads and sales.

Charli didn’t record the song herself due to a bizarre neurological condition called synaesthesia, the tendency for the senses to involuntarily cross over so it is possible to “smell” words and “taste” colours. In her case, she feels she is able to “see” sounds. She later reflected that “I Love It” didn’t have the right “look” to fit her work. Nevertheless she performed the song with Icona Pop at South by Southwest festival in Texas, US, where both acts were playing.

  • Charli XCX

Charli XCX With: Elliphant and Femme, Trees - Dallas - October 2014 The fact that a smaller venue like Trees comfortably housed an already established artist such as Charli XCX, is a feat it itself. Charli XCX, known for her immensely popular collaborations with Iggy Azalea for "Fancy", and Icona Pop for "I Love It", along with her recent chart topper, "Boom Clap", featured on "The Fault in Our Stars" soundtrack, is a powerhouse writer, vocalist, and performer. At the age of 22, she has already released 4 EPs, an LP and her follow up LP, Sucker, is now available for pre-order, and been asked to write for artists like Britney Spears and Rita Ora. As for her performance, Charli is a true performer, style, poise, charm, lights, colors, all female backing band, enthusiasm, crowd interaction, and perhaps the most important quality of a good live performance, legitimate album quality live vocals. She can hit all the highs, lows, and change it up to keep it interesting. She is not an act that will disappoint. My praise for Charli's opening acts, Elliphant and Femme is equivalent to the headliner. They both really brought their own style, tones, and crowd warming up capabilities to their sets. Both openers met with fans after, took pictures, and signed merch until the end of the show. As always, the artists' merch staff were all really awesome. Cons: 1. The general staff and guards at Trees (venue), are not very nice and extremely strict, having no qualms about dragging kids from the front of the stage is they are seen drinking. 2. Charli has gotten a bit too popular to sign merch after shows. 3. A Long Island Iced Tea is going to cost you $10 from the bar. 3. The show started an hour late. 4. Elliphant's DJ messed up her set 3 times, he was starting to kill the mood, and that is not cool. 5. No re-entry into the venue once you leave, no exceptions. 5 stars for the concert from me.

  • Charli XCX is absolutely amazing. I am a huge fan of Charli and love all of her music but, as great as it is to listen to from a pair of headphones, it cannot compare to live. Charli XCX performing live can be described as stunning, breathtaking, beautiful, crazy, wild, and just perfect. I saw her perform on Tuesday October 7th at Webster Hall in Manhattan. The venue was great, small with an amazing sound system. The bass shook my whole body, as did the absolutely insane crowd jumping up and down, loving every second of Charli's spectacular performance.

One of my favorite parts of the concert was when Charli performed Fancy by herself. This was a surprise to me because I had not checked her setlist and assumed there would be no Fancy since Iggy wasn't there. Boy was I wrong! She performed it by herself, rapping Iggy's parts as well as singing hers. It was such an amazing surprise to see that as I never expected it. She rapped to it really well. I would rate the concert 10/10 and I will be making sure I attend every single Charli XCX concert I can from now on as they are such a wild experience that no one should miss out on. Go on, buy tickets now and see Charli live, it is more than worth it!

  • I recently saw Charli XCX for the first time and was pleasantly surprised. I knew very little about her before going to the show, and had no idea if I would love or hate it. I had only heard You (Ha Ha Ha) and her hit song, I Love It, which she did with Icona Pop.

So I went into it with high hopes. I wasn't disappointed. Her style of music reminded me of other quirky acts, such as Grimes and Brook Candy (who is featured on Charli XCX's album, True Romance), which is always a good thing. The show was enjoyable, and the crowd seemed to love her. It was the kind of crowd you would expect to find at the Coachella Music Festival.

It was diverse, but everyone seemed to be getting along. It was like an outdoors rave minus the ecstasy. There was a lot of writhing, swaying, and jumping about. Charli XCX's performance was very good, though I will admit that it didn't make me want to go running to itunes to buy her album. I enjoyed Nuclear Season and Black Roses, in particular, because I found them to be a bit weirder and more to my tastes than some of the other songs. Everyone went crazy during the last song, which was, unsurprisingly, You (Ha Ha Ha).

  • Charli XCX was fantastic! I saw her at Webster Hall and she brought the house down. There were cool balloons and handmade banners plastered all over the venue, which added a really personal touch.

Her band was all female! I was totally shocked but it makes me love her even more. The entire band was badass and added to the girl-power attitude. They all wore matching cheerleading uniforms and it was awesome. (They said "sucker" on them.)

The crowd was pretty good. There weren't a lot of young, squealing girls and boys; it was mostly people in their 20's.

Charli really engaged with her audience. She came really close to the front of the stage and sang to all of the fans. She caught bras and flowers thrown on the stage and basked in all of the love she was given. It was absolutely fantastic. Also, her relatives were there and it was adorable to see them dancing as she sang.

    10/10 would recommend/see again! Totally a must!

  • I was surprisingly impressed by Charli's gig in Sheffield this March! She has a powerful voice and so much energy when performing! Every song felt like a hit, even amongst well-known songs such as Boom Clap and I Love It. It was amazing to meet Charli after the show, she was so nice, appreciative and humble, she said she wasn't feeling very well that night but you wouldn't have been able to tell given the brilliant performance she put on!

  • Lights on stage were too bright and they made it not possible to enjoy the concert fully. There were moments when I had to have my eyes completely closed. I watched the show through my phone... Other than that Charli was full of energy and what I loved the most is that she was truly herself. I absolutely loved voguers that were on stage with her during Shake It.

  • Charli had an amazing act! She is so entertaining and she is really supportive to Halsey and PARTYNEXTDOOR since she was performing at Halsey’s Hopeless Fountain Kingdom Tour. She also went up to the people on the left side and high fived them! (The people right above the Floor Seats) I really suggest you go to the concert!

  • pretty good! played her biggest songs and it was pretty fun! given she was an opening act for halsey she only had 6ish songs but like i said they were all the ones everyone knew! compared to halsey though, her effects and videos being shown on the screen weren't as good, but who can compete with halsey!?

  • Charli was everything I expected her to bet yet she still somehow managed to exceed my high expectations. She literally broke the Terminal 5 glass ceiling. She slayed my mind, scalp me bald. Allie X being the opening act just made the show better since I stan her as well. 110% pure pop excellence!
