The anno 1404 History Edition version of the game is only available to play as multiplayer if you own and launch the Venice expansion of the game.

The game added co-op and multiplayer originally with the Venice expansion.

The game options for this mode are Multiplayer Internet, Multiplayer Local Network and Multiplayer Quickmatch.

Can i still buy the Venice-Expansion via Steam? I'm only interested in Anno 1404+ Expansion, not the older ones.

On GOG I saw the Gold edition (Game+Expansion). Would that work better for me than the History Edition?

The Venice expansion should actually be included with the History Edition version of this game on Steam -

When you go to launch the game from Steam you will need to click on the launch options and instead select the Venice expansion to launch from the drop down option it will give you, this will then allow you to launch the Venice edition and use the multiplayer :)

Don't buy Gold Edition, it's same outdated as Dawn of Discovery or Anno 1404 and Ubisoft closed multiplayer support for it. Only History Edition, best choice is on Uplay directly, it has sometimes promocode for additional discount and will be cheaper than on Steam. Besides, you need Uplay in any case and one client is better than two. The game itself is about developing Occidental civilization as the primary, which receives some exotic goods from Orients and you gotta develop both.

I got one more questions concerning teams. When I play with a friend in a team, so he is added below my avatar in the lobby, we play as one character, right? He is not a separate "nation" in my team? Or do we have 2 ships at the beginning and we build different islands, etc.

you can do both :D but youll need an open slot for him to join so he gets his own ship and materials, but you can also add him below your caracther so you have shared control

So if we played with shared control, we only have one ship for us two to settle at the beginning, right?

Since I don't plan to start many different attempts for an endless game, I am unsure about the game settings. So natural disasters, difficulty with the AI, etc. I am aware that this is very individual. I like the huge map (ok for online play?), then I would add two computer players to the two human players. I am not sure how difficult I should set the AI. In the case of natural disasters, I read that one triggers every 40 minutes, that's too much for me.

So maybe there are some dos and don'ts on the part of the experienced players, so that I avoid annoying mistakes in the game settings.

These some suggestions, I played solo only but guess it should work for MP as well, so you may take it or ignore:\ A huge map, large easy islands with many fertilities, materials, neutrals and quests have more potential for development, also you need a good seed, last time i played on 32565. It has a large fertile Orient island and some large islands with cider,hemp,iron and stone for Occident. Many negative effects such as plague or volcano could be disabled as they it determine difficulty slider on the bottom, if you need it for achievements. There're three difficulty level of AI's and a specific faction such as corsairs. Guess you have to avoid a hard one as they're pretty much challenging. You may use full refund of construction cost because no option for moving buildings, starting situation is on any ship with the revealed map on for you to choose what island to settle and watching for AI's. Sabotage and City Council as a part of Venice DLC. The first gives every player, including AI, ability to perform some dirty things on other player's settlements and the second for peacfull takeover, you can capture other settlements spending lots of golds, likewise AI does.

Hey 10vorne!

My understanding with this is you go to create a new session, at which point there should be a 'load' option, containing your previous multiplayer game.

Selecting this should load up the previous map and allow the same players as earlier to re-join.
