How to find a phone’s IMEI number

What is an IMEI number?
Devices such as smartphones and tablets have a unique identification number known as an IMEI number, which stands for ‘International Mobile Equipment Identity’. This 15-digit code is used to identify a device when on a mobile network, which can be useful when repairing or recovering a phone.
What are IMEI numbers used for?
IMEI numbers are used to identify each device and its specifications, including the model and manufacturer. This helps network carriers deliver technical support and troubleshooting for individual devices.
The IMEI number is also an important piece of information that can help when reporting stolen or lost phones. It prohibits the device from being used on the network while in other hands, and can also aid in tracking the phone.
Is an IMEI number different from a serial or MEID number?
IMEI and MEID numbers can only be found assigned to phones and communications devices, and are done so by the network carrier. Whether you have an IMEI or MEID number will depend on which carrier you use, but you’re generally less likely to see MEID numbers being used due to the switch from AMPS (Advanced Mobile Phone System) to GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications).
Serial numbers are different in that they are assigned by the manufacturer to all products, so they can organise and track each item. This can include mobile devices but also household goods, toys and more.
Locating an IMEI number
On an iPhone
- Go to Settings > General > About.
- Scroll down to check your IMEI number.
On an Android
- Go to Settings > About phone or About device.
- You’ll be able to find your IMEI, model and serial numbers here.
Other ways to access an IMEI number
Dial a number
A quick and easy way to get access to your IMEI number is to dial #06# on your phone. The 15-digit number will appear on your screen while on the call.
Check the SIM card tray
It’s possible to find the IMEI number on the SIM card or SIM card tray, so it’s worth opening it up and checking the SIM.
Check your phone’s box
If you’re still holding on to the phone’s original packaging, the IMEI number can also be located on the box.
Use Google’s ‘Find My Phone’ feature
Android device owners can use Google’s ‘Find My Phone’ feature as an alternative way of locating their IMEI number.
- Go to Settings > Security > Find My Device.
- Tap the phone icon in the top left.
- Go to Information.
- You can then view the IMEI number at the right of the phone icon.
Look at your phone’s battery
Another place to check for the IMEI number is on the battery. It will likely be printed onto a sticker that is attached to the unit.
Find the engraving on the back of the phone
Some smartphones have an engraving of the IMEI number on the back of the device, so you can quickly find the number when you need it.
iPhone
Certain iPhone models will have the IMEI number on the device itself. Check your iPhone 5, 6 or original SE for an engraving of the number on the back.
Android
A large amount of Android devices also have the IMEI number engraved on the back, so it’s worth checking there before trying to locate it using a different method.
