Reservoir Dogs is one of the greatests scripts ever written (and that ending is by no means ambiguous)

Spoilers

I've seen this film three times and to me, it just gets better every time. What stands out to me is that not a single secons is wasted in it. Every line, every gesture, it means something. It says something about the characters and their motives. And the characters, they just feel so unique, they stand out in their own way.

One of my favourite parts is the cafe scene. Now everyone talks about Mr. Pink's iconic speech on tips but can we talk about other details? Mr. White's closeness to Joe is established here as he snatches his notebook and acts cheeky toward him. Which is later expanded on in the flashback sequence with Joe referring to him as "junior" and further emphasising on their paternal bond. Which makes the ending all the more devastating.

We also see Mr. White and Mr. Orange's camaraderie. They sit next to each other, the camera is angled in a way we see Orange's amused reactions to his jokes and at some point, White winks at Orange after being cheeky to Joe. He doesn't display this easy camaraderie to others.

We also learn a little about Mr. Orange. He immediately gives away that Mr. Pink didn't leave any tips. When earlier he was about to take his own tip back due to Mr. Pink's reasoning. On first watch, this seemed like the rookie trying to fit in but in hindsight, it was the rat showing his true color while also trying to fit in with the mob.

The cafe scene is one example. The film is littered with significant details thoughout. One that stood out to me is the Orang and White flashback. When White goes all Agent 47 on the cops, Orange just stands and watch with distress. He can stop it, he can kill White and go to the warehouse with the excuse that White has been killed by the cops. But he chose not to because he too was beginning to care for Mr. White. Then afterward White reacts with a simple "he's dead?" To Mr. Brown's death (complete contrast to how he reacts to Orange getting shot later) while he proactively drags Orange away.

This film is just incredible. And the ending is so raw and powerful with Mr. White killing and betraying his father-figure and then killing the one person he had done all that for. Then dying himself.
