R Sarathkumar is currently enjoying a good run as his recently released thriller film Por Thozhil has emerged as a critical and commercial success. Though he is currently more inclined towards portraying layered characters, thereby showcasing his exceptional acting skills, Sarathkumar has delivered multiple blockbuster hits in his prime like Surya Vamsam (1997).
Now, 26 years after the film premiered, Sarathkumar has revealed that the sequel to Surya Vamsam is currently in the works, creating a sense of anticipation and eagerness among his fans who are now longing for further updates on the project.
A movie that delved into the dynamics of interpersonal relationships and the destructive impact of ego and communication barriers on familial bonds, Surya Vamsam featured Sarathkumar in a dual role portraying a father and son. Not only did the film achieve immense success as one of Tamil industry’s major blockbusters in 1997, but it was also remade in Telugu (1998) as well as Hindi under the title Sooryavansham (1999) and in Kannada as Surya Vamsha (2000).
Taking to Twitter on the occasion of the film’s 26th anniversary, Sarathkumar wrote, “It has been 26 years since the release of Suryavamsam, a special family film that can be celebrated in my artistic journey. Time has passed, technology has progressed and it is still in the minds of fans from all walks of life. Thanks to the fans who enjoyed the entire movie, its characters, dialogues, and songs, and made it a huge success! Soon Suryavamsam – 2!…”

Alongside Sarathkumar, the film also starred Raadhika Sarathkumar, Devayani, Priya Raman and Manivannan in significant roles.
While the film enjoyed tremendous success in all three languages, it failed to make an impact in Bollywood, despite featuring Amitabh Bachchan in the lead role. Nevertheless, Sooryavansham achieved cult status over the years, especially as it has been regularly broadcasted on Sony Max.
The Telugu version featured Daggubati Venkatesh and Meena in the lead roles, while the Kannada remake was headlined by Vishnuvardhan and Isha Koppikar.
