      Critics Consensus

Requiem is as much a mysterious thriller with Lynchian elements as it is a compelling character study.

Brad Newsome Sydney Morning Herald With a raft of well-judged performances, not least that of Sian Reese-Williams as the girl who grew up blaming herself for Carys' disappearance, Requiem returns the viewer's investment in spades. Apr 11, 2018 Full Review Steve Greene indieWire Requiem offers a few sure answers, but it leaves enough to the imagination to make it both an insightful look at human nature and a compelling piece of TV. Sara M I found the premise of this show, along with the atmosphere, architecture, and landscape--pretty appealing, and I was drawn in at once. As I watched, though, I found myself thinking "WTF?" more than I would have liked. It was clear that there was a mystery having to do with the main character's past, and then it was also clear that there were some kind of mystical beings/thin dark faeries / archangels / witches lingering just beyond the borders of all the human weirdness and personality disorders. The only other thing that was clear was that everyone was deeply unhappy or bonkers or possessed, and summoning something, and being "ridden" by something. I guess that's a metaphor? Maybe it's the human condition, and we are all summoning and being ridden by nixies [sigh]. In my mind, at least, the threads did not get satisfactorily sorted out, and I find that I don't care enough to watch it all again to see if I can find some clues I missed the first time. By the end, sadly, I didn't care much about any of the characters; somehow they all turned into hysterical strangers in the finale, and the mystery itself just turned sort of silly. I didn't even care enough to try and remember who the "Trudy" on the phone was in the last scene. But you see I have still given this 3.5 stars despite my snarky comments. This is because 1) I really like the main character's bangs and attractive coats and sweaters; 2) I kept watching with every appearance of interest; 3) Wales is cool and mysterious, and I'm on board with its mystique; and 4) I like Mr. Bates from _Downton Abbey_ and was glad to see him in this. Overall, I have probably seen worse things. And if there happens to be a second season, maybe I'll tune in just to see if it can alleviate my ennui. Hence my somewhat-favorable rating. These items are worth something, aren't they? Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Tarek F Brilliant! Well written, attractive storyline, great acting and directing. Lovely British scenery as well. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Snorefest. Slow moving. I really tried to give it a chance and typically will watch the whole series even if I'm not really into it (especially one this short), but it literally seems like absolutely nothing is happening. I'm halfway through E3 and I'm done. All that is going on is people sitting around, talking. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Started off weak, got pretty good hallway through its six episodes and finished pathetically. It's as if the writers on short notice were told they were fired, but had to write the concluding episode quickly and without compensation. The final episode was an aimless, ricocheting, overabundance of nonsense, with most aspects falling far short of even extrapolated meaning or completion. Intrigue, midway through the season became meandering, incomplete, disconnected, random absurdity. It is probably the worst final episode of anything I have ever watched. Its closing really was that bad and quite a disservice to the potential it demonstrated just an episode or two earlier, despite the unlikable, self-indulgent and often obnoxious main character. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review bogan b It wasn't so much the really bad and distracting hair style of the lead that annoyed me as much as the way the story plodded along aimlessly after the first episode. It began OK, but eventually appeared to have been completed by a committee of writers. There are unresolved matters, red herrings galore, and plot holes that no amount of bodies could fill. This really could have quite easily become a great murder/missing person mystery, but instead, for some weird reason that only the authors could attempt to justify, becomes an extremely awkward and embarrassing supernatural/horror tale. Most of this stuff spews out in the final half of the last episode, completely erasing any logic gleaned out of the prior episodes. Do yourself a favour and leave this one alone. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Have the writers of this drama never heard of DNA tests? Obviously not.
