Issue with Mint Mobile SIM Card in BlackBerry Passport SQW100-1: Network Dropping to ‘SOS
Has anyone else experienced this problem? After initially connecting, my Mint Mobile SIM card in my BlackBerry Passport SQW100-1 loses network connection after a few minutes or hours, displaying ‘SOS’. The only temporary fix is to insert the SIM card into an Android phone, switch the network to LTE, and then re-insert it into the Passport. I’ve tried everything, but data, email, and text functionality remain elusive. Any suggestions or similar experiences?
Thanks, everyone, for the input. I knew about the non-VoLTE devices getting booted off the network, but it's puzzling to see posts from other users here and on the dumbphones subreddit claiming successful use of the BB Classic with Mint Mobile in the USA. Some posts are as recent as two weeks ago. Perhaps they're encountering the same issue but not reporting back. It's a bit of a mystery
Mint doesn’t work for me on my classic. I used telegram to text my wife and family. It’s a good alternative to my iPhone while at home. I ordered lyca mobile, comes Monday. I know it’s all T-Mobile but I’ll let you know if it works better
This is due to T-Mobile BS policy of automatically disconnecting non-VoLTE devices from their network after a few minutes. The only way to fix it would be changing the IMEI to one of a newer device.
Sorry :( This is really unfortunate to hear. I just got done tricking mine out and was planning on switching to mint. I put my T-Mobile sim in it from my iPhone and initially it only did emergency calls but I noticed it latching onto 4g lte somewhat often. It’s not consistent enough to leave home with only the blackberry. Would love to hear if mint has worked for anyone else. It seems like the perfect phone for what a lot of people are looking for. This phone legitimately cannot work in America or what?
Quick update: A huge shoutout to a very kind Redditor who shared some instructions with me. Turns out, when you put the SIM back into an Android phone, you have to manually set the network to connect to a 2G signal. Surprisingly, this seems to stabilize the connection when you switch the SIM back to the BlackBerry, preventing it from getting booted off the network even after making calls. I'm now on day two without any issues after following the Redditor's advice. u/Dogedadogo, you're awesome! Thank you so much.
Holy shit that just worked for me with my Classic! Thank you so much for sharing. 🫡
You just solved every blackberry owner's problem!!! I just tried this as well and what do you know...It DID work for me as well! Share this gem piece of information to everyone.
Mint, since they run on T-Mobile network, will NOT support any blackberries!
They do, it’s just the “disconnecting issue”. They still have 2G but limited.
My KeyONEs and Key 2s work fine on Mint Mobile
Yes they do, I use Mint in my BlackBerrys..
Nope had someone message me with the exact same thing and they were on mint also
So do I, but it’s a Key2LE
It's because the SIM card there's nothing you can do about it meant just loses signal
man this phone is dope.
I've had this happen to me. Eventually, I had to give up on the phone itself because, I tested my Sim card onto my z10 and it worked normally. I used a friend's Sim card onto the passport and it displayed the, 'sos' as well. I believe the Sim card reader is the issue and one would need to replace it.
