Blue Devils Advance to NCAA Championship; Place Second in Regional

CLE ELUM, Wash.  – For the 34th time in program history and the 32nd under head coach Dan Brooks, the Duke women's golf team advanced to the NCAA Championship on Wednesday as the Blue Devils placed second at the NCAA Cle Elum Regional, which was contested at the 6,306-yard, par-72 Tumble Creek Club in Cle Elum, Wash. 
 
Duke featured two golfers in the top seven – Emma McMyler (6th) and Andie Smith (7th) – along with all five Blue Devils in the top 20 following 54 holes – Katie Li (13th), Anne Chen (T13) and Phoebe Brinker (T19).  McMyler turned in her fourth straight top-10 finish at an NCAA Regional to become one of only two Blue Devils in program history to accomplish that mark (Leona Maguire). 
 
As a team, Duke posted rounds of 282, 288 and 295 for a 54-hole score of 865.  Stanford (847) won the regional with Virginia (876), Arizona State (885) and San Jose State (887) rounding out the top five teams advancing. 
 
The Blue Devils advanced to the NCAA Championship, which will take place May 17-22 at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
 
How It Happened
  • Graduate student Emma McMyler carded rounds of 74, 69 and 72 to finish 1-under, 215, which was sixth overall.After parring the first four holes, McMyler dropped three shots over a span of two holes.She connected on her first birdie of the day on the par-5 eighth hole as she sank a 7-footer.After a 3-putt bogey on No. 12, McMyler hit her pitching wedge from 125 yards to seven feet for birdie.She then went to the 528-yard, par-5 14th and hit her 3-hybrid from 237 yards to inches for her third eagle of the season to return to even par.McMyler, a native of San Antonio, Texas, closed with a 3-foot birdie on No. 15 and 2-putt birdie on No. 18 and finished with a 72.She hit 13 greens, 12 fairways and rolled 30 putts.
  • With her second-straight top-10 finish at a NCAA Regional, sophomore Andie Smith posted rounds of 72, 72 and 73 for a 1-over, 217, which was seventh overall.After a slow start to the day, Smith reached the par-5 eighth green in two and 2-putted for birdie to get to 2-over.Smith bogeyed No. 10, but then hit her 50-degree wedge from 110 yards to three feet for birdie on No. 12.She closed the day playing her final five holes at 2-under.Smith, who is from Hobe Sound, Fla., 2-putted for birdie on the par-5 14th and rolled in a 15-footer for birdie on No. 15 to finish with a 73.She hit 12 greens, 12 fairways and had 33 putts on the day.
  • Freshman Katie Li turned in Duke's first birdie of the day on the 320-yard, par-3 third hole to get to 1-under.She dropped three shots over the next seven holes, but regrouped and closed the day at 1-under over her final eight holes.Li, who hails from Basking Ridge, N.J., drained a 60-foot birdie on No. 17 for her second birdie of the day.She finished the week tied for 13th with scores of 73, 75 and 73 for a 221.Li hit 11 fairways, 13 greens and had 32 putts.
  • Also turning in a tied for 13th finish with scores of 67, 77 and 77 for a 221 was senior Anne Chen.A native of Sugar Land, Texas, Chen was held without a birdie in the final round as she hit 13 greens and 13 fairways.She collected her third top-20 finish of the season.
  • After shooting 2-under the first two days, senior Phoebe Brinker finished the week with an 81 and tied for 19th with scores of 70 and 72 the first 36 holes.Her two birdies in the final round came on No. 8 as she got up-and-down from just off the green.Brinker, who is from Wilmington, Del., also hit her 7-iron on No. 10 to three feet for birdie.
 
Notes
  • Duke's 54-hole score of 865 was the eighth-best in Blue Devil history at a NCAA Regional.
  • The Blue Devils placed all five golfers in the top-20 for only the second time in Duke history at a NCAA Regional (2003 – Salem Glenn Country Club in Clemmons, N.C.)
  • Duke posted its 19th top-2 finish in a NCAA Regional in school history.
  • All five Duke golfers counted at least one round over the 54 holes this week.
  • Emma McMyler turned in her fourth-straight top-10 finish at a NCAA Regional and will compete at the NCAA Championship for the first time in her career.  Only one other Duke golfer, Leona Maguire, has carded four straight top-10 finishes at a NCAA Regional.
  • McMyler posted her 17th round of even or under par this season and 55th of her career.She also notched her third eagle of the season on No. 14. McMyler posted her third top-10 finish of the year.
  • McMyler led the field with a 12-under ledger on par-5 holes for the week.Her 13 birdies ranked second.
  • Katie Li totaled 39 pars to rank tied for third. 
  • Over 54 holes, Duke posted 28 birdies and one eagle on holes 14-18.
  • The Blue Devils shot 28-under on par-5 holes during the week to rank second.Duke's 44 birdies also ranked second.
  • Head coach Dan Brooks has led Duke to 32 appearances in the NCAA Championship over his 40 seasons.
  • In two appearances in a NCAA Regional, Andie Smith has posted a fourth-place (2023) and seventh-place (2024) finishes, which are her two best finishes of the season.
  • Phoebe Brinker posted her fifth top-20 finish of the season and 19th of her career.
