About us

Welcome
to INAF-Astronomical Observatory of Trieste

with 270 years of history

INAF-OATs is today one of the major centers of the National Institute of Astrophysics (INAF). The Basevi and Bazzoni villas serve as city offices, while the observation station, which is also open to the public, is located on the Carso, near Basovizza. The research fields range from studying the Sun to distant galaxies, from stars to the primordial Universe, from high-energy physics to astrobiology. The Observatory pays special attention to the education of young people, both through educational activities in undergraduate and doctoral courses at the University of Trieste and SISSA, and by funding scholarships and doctorates. OATS also carries out an intense outreach activity, the cornerstone of which is the 60cm telescope of Specola Margherita Hack, visited by thousands of people each year.
