is it just me, or does this get better every year? Phoenix has probably never sounded fresher and younger, not even on United. there is no bad track in-between, it is all a bunch of shallow indulgent candy, one song even being about whipped cream. if you listen to the text, you might hear some fine relationship plots. it's the alternative soundtrack to CMBYN. the overextended schwulst slaps from bella italia to siberia!

A move upwards from the artistic bottom of Bankrupt! which was even quite mediocre. Here, there are still a few tracks that I am not fond of (including the title track), but half of Ti amo sounds like high quality music to me. "Fior de latte", "Lovelife", "Goodbye Soleil", "Via Veneto" and probably "Telefono" are fine. Still, I keep hesitating with this rating, while the rest isn't notably good. But I emphasise the positive, and note that this album brings Phoenix once again closer to Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, which was still quite good. At its best, the songwriting even seems to be better here. Ti amo is still not at all as good as United or Alphabetical in my opinion, but mostly surprisingly valid.

This record arguably has 3-4 amazing songs (J-Boy, Fior Di Latte, Lovelife, and Telefono are my favorites, Fleur De Lys and TuttiFrutti are next). I see how some of these songs almost bleed into each other, and for someone looking for a more segmented journey, this record might not seem appealing. To me, it reminds me a bit of the fluidity in "Wolfgang" with the two "Love Like a Sunset" tracks, just not on that level.
Overall, I don't understand the hate, I was hooked when it released, and am happy I revisited it in the new year. Looking for more by them soon.

This was really the first time I had my "moment" with the band. And in this particular case, I'm glad that my "moment" seemed like an isolated event. I listened to a few songs on this album a ton after seeing them live. Prob nonstop for a week. When meeting up with friends, I would bring it up in conversation -- "hey, have you heard that Phoenix song?" -- didn't seem like anyone was really as interested as I was! And I can't really blame them. The album had already been out a year by the time I got into it. And I wasn't even really interested in the most popular songs from the album.
BUT in any case, I was kind of glad that my moment felt remote - I also like the experience of figuring out something in a collective way too. But there is def a magic to a few of these songs. A magic that is sort of disconnected from reality. In a kind of Daft Punk DIGITAL LOVE kind of way. You listen to it a bunch, and you feel kind of intoxicated almost. And so to listen to this and experience this, in a kind of detached from reality fashion - I have to say that it was kind of nice.

Lovely distraction.
A successful sugary sunshine pop album. A well crafted distraction, plenty going on.Published
Good pop rock, very radio friendly songs with catchy beats and rhythms. "Lovelife" is the standout track, will lift up any mood. Good melody with some synthesizers mixed in. "Fleur de lys" has a cub music vibe to it. The album kind of fades towards the end. Definitely not a boring album, I have to say this band does have an ear for melody.
