Summer is on the horizon and things are about to get dark in the DC Universe. This July, DC Comics is officially kicking off its big event, Absolute Power, which sees Waller’s plans finally come to fruition. She and her partners in the Trinity of Evil have successfully robbed the planet’s metahumans of their powers, leaving them powerless against Waller’s terrifying new, all-Amazo squad, Task Force VII. But all isn’t lost just yet as one cover hints at the DC Universe’s last and greatest hope.

All of the reformed Justice League’s members wear new costumes to make up for their lack of powers

In Dan Mora’s variant cover for Absolute Power #1, fans get a good look at the new ‘Resistance’ Justice League that is uniting to stop Waller, the Trinity of Evil, and Task Force VII. The Resistance is composed of the Justice League’s founding members Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, and Aquaman. All of the reformed Justice League’s members wear new costumes to make up for their lack of powers now that Waller and her Amazo army have stolen them.

Wonder Woman has a black body suit in addition to her Amazonian armor while Batman has a much more fortified version of his Batsuit. The Flash has a more practical suit for running at high speeds, with padding and goggles to protect him. Superman has returned to wearing his all-black recovery suit while Hal is left to just his flight suit and bomber jacket. Last but not least, Aquaman has a killer set of armor with bladed gauntlets to fight off Amanda Waller’s terrible forces.

How the Justice League Broke and Waller Rose to Power

Though the Justice League is one of the DC Universe’s greatest institutions, they faced one of their greatest defeats after they confronted a mad Pariah. Their fallen ally ‘killed’ the team and trapped them on paradise planets to power a device that would revive the multiverse. Thankfully, the team was rescued from their prisons and they successfully defeated Pariah. But when the dust settled, the team decided it was best for them to step down and allow the Titans to take over as the DCU’s de facto hero team.

The Justice League officially disbanded in Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths #7 (2022)!

Unbeknownst to the heroes, though, Amanda Waller monitored the Dark Crisis and came to one conclusion: Metahumans were the source of the DC Universe’s biggest problems. She offered a plan to imprison DC’s metahumans on a worldwide scale to the enigmatic Council of Light. However, she was pressed to eliminate them altogether, something she was equally for. Waller began a long campaign in the shadows, manipulating heroes and villains as she prepared for a war that would change the face of the DC Universe forever.

While Waller gained more power than ever during “Beast World”, becoming the new head of the Bureau of Sovereignty, other forces loomed in the background. Batman’s backup personality Zur-En-Arrh managed to escape from Batman’s head and transferred his consciousness to Failsafe, a powerful android Batman designed as a contingency against himself. After imprisoning Bruce, Zur-En-Arrh began a crusade as the DCU’s new Batman. Zur-En-Arrh even procured several Amazo robots, hinting that he had much bigger ambitions than just stopping crime in Gotham.

Does the Justice League Have What it Takes to Stop Task Force VII

It should be noted that this is the first time the original core seven members of the Justice League have united since the New 52. While that’s something long-time fans are no doubt happy to see, it’s a big hampered by the fact that six of the members are losing the special powers that made them one of the greatest fighting forces in the DCU. But don’t count the team out just yet. After all, the Justice League has one of the best non-powered heroes leading them.

While he's always more than pulled his own weight, Batman is going to be the one with the serious advantage here.

Batman’s gotten some guff over the years over being a mortal man on a team of powerful aliens and god-level heroes. While he's always more than pulled his own weight, Batman is going to be the one with the serious advantage here. He’s honed his body and mastered the skills necessary to survive in a world where he’s greatly outmatched. Now he’s going to have to pass those skills on to his closest allies if the Justice League wants any chance of surviving Absolute Power.

While they may not have powers during the event, don’t count the rest of the Justice League out just yet. Superman is wearing his recovery suit, the same solar-absorbing clothes that helped him come back from his battle with Doomsday. Wonder Woman might not have powers, but she’s still a threat thanks to her Amazonian training. The Justice League are prepared to make up for their shortcomings, and as long as they work together, there's no doubt they can overcome the obstacle ahead of them.

The Justice League's Teamwork is Their Greatest Asset

This isn’t the first time the Justice League has faced a nightmare scenario (though facing off against an Amazo team with the League’s powers is a terrifying prospect). More than their special abilities, what’s always gotten the Justice League through their many trials is teamwork. Batman has assembled the people he’s worked with the longest because he knows that the seven of them can overcome anything, even if their powers aren’t working. By bringing the original seven Justice League members together, Batman’s Resistance just might end up saving the DC universe in Absolute Power.

Absolute Power #1 is available on July 3rd from DC Comics.
