I've got a fairly decent film and television score collection going. This one is interesting in that there are actually TWO soundtrack cds for this film. This one is the traditional film score by Mark Snow, who did the tv series as well. I'm sure you've read all the reviews about how awesome it is, so I won't bore you - if you're a fan and enjoy having soundtracks, this is a must-have.
The second CD is a collection of music that various pop artists did. A couple of these tracks made it into the end-credits of the movie, but weren't included on the standard soundtrack CD.

I chose this rating because it's great. It's not as great as the music from the T.V. show, which was a little disappointing. Though it has some scares it is nowhere as creepy as some of the episodes were, but it makes up for it mostly in it's grand scale. Like the film, I think the music is as if they spent way more money on it then compared to the T.V. show, which I guess they did. I have bought many soundtracks from amazon and think it's the best place to buy compact discs. I would recommend this to anyone who has seen the show or the films.

Amazing! Just buy it! Corn Copters takes you right back to the big "jiffy pop poppers" scene :) "Trust No One" is classic X-Files.

This was the third soundtrack I bought, after "Jurassic Park" and "The Lost World," when I started building my film score collection over three years ago. I only had to listen to it one time, and I was hooked. Mark Snow not only hit a homerun with this soundtrack, he hit the ball clear out of the stadium.
I really didn't know what to expect from this CD when I bought it. Being a hardcore X-Files fan, I bought it the same day I first saw it. I knew from watching the TV series that Snow had the ability to create some great music ("Colony"/"End Game" and "Nisei"/"731" and "Gethsemane"/Redux I & II"); however, I also knew that he wasn't great all the time. But when I popped this CD into my CD player, I knew as soon as the orchestra struck the opening notes that it was going to be unlike anything I had ever heard from Snow before. And what I heard I liked.
This score contains 24 tracks of, in my humble opinion, Snow's best work. Not only does he use his standard synthesizer type music, but he also integrates an 80-piece orchestra into the framework as well. This gives the score such an incredible and unique depth that it can only be appreciated upon listening to it. All 68 minutes of it.
I hadn't even seen the movie yet before I had purchased the soundtrack, and for some reason this has always worked for me. I can usually tell by the quality of the score whether or not I will enjoy the movie, and this perfectly parallels with the movie in every regard. The music is haunting when it needs to be; it's sweet when it needs to be; and it's pulsing with intensity when it needs to be. Snow did have, after all, four years of practice before he ever set out making this score, so it's not like he was just winging it.
In short, I love this score. There is not one bad track on the entire CD, and that in and of itself is a rarity for a movie soundtrack. I'm pretty sure most X-Philes will be pleased, but I also think film score buffs will like it as well.
Kudos to Mark Snow for creating such a great piece of work. Here's hoping his work on the second X-Files movie (if there is one) is just as good, if not better, than the first.

The one and only problem I found with this excellent soundtrack is the absence of a ending credits track. And do you know why there was no ending credits track? Because Chris Carter made the stupid desicion of having a bunch of very un-X-files-like bands make another evil soundtrack. This was also my only complaint with the movie itself. Why are they doing this with movies these days? I am convinced that half those songs weren't even in the movie! One song while Mulder was in the bar, and maybe two during the credits. Where are the others?!?!?!? Could somebody please explain this to me because I am really confused. Why write songs for a movie when they aren't even in the movie? I DON'T GET IT! And how dare they steal my end credits song? Every other soundtrack I have (Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Arc, etc.) has an end credits track that beats all the others. And now they have denied me my X-files credits song. Curses! If you can explain this to me, PLEA! SE DO! E-mail me, I need an explination!

As much as I enjoy Mark Snow's music this score didn't work so well for me. Sure it fits the eerie atmosphere of the film but there's just not here that I enjoy listening to isolated from the film ('I want to believe', on the other hand, contains some beautifully rich thematic material for the emotional interactions between Mulder and Scully's characters). The scope of this album is just a little too consistently dark to really appreciate outside of the film.
