Before Star Trek: Discovery season 5's world premiere at SXSW, the cast spoke to Screen Rant to celebrate their final season. Mary Wiseman, with a little help from Discovery's series lead Sonequa Martin-Green, spoke about the last day of filming with her fellow actors on the USS Discovery's bridge, and how Martin-Green "clapped out" each exiting actor. Mary Wiseman: We had one bridge day, which was cool. And I think the weird, eerie thing about it was it just felt like all the millions of bridge days that we've had, and all the joking and being ridiculous, and those are like my favorite moments. Those days can be really daunting but like. it was a party... when everybody is on that set facing something down. Just the moments in between setups could just be so deliriously fun and full of love. And then you have like the deepest conversations of your life... (laughs)

Sonequa Martin-Green: And, like, the deep work...

Mary Wiseman: Yeah, I mean 1,000,000%. And so all of that happened, and when's lunch and like all of this, and then at the end, it's just over. It was strange. Endings are so weird to comprehend. They don't really make sense. You know, it takes time to be like, 'Oh, yeah, it's over' But I remember Wilson reminded me that you clap people out at the end of a season so Sonequa, I think you led the clapping out. I remember I was just sitting there being so cool. You can tell I'm pretty cool. And she said my name and I just, like, exploded in tears.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Is About Endings

Discovery comes to a satisfying conclusion

Although the cast and crew of Star Trek: Discovery season 5 didn't know it would be their final season when they were filming, Star Trek executive producer Alex Kurtzman told Screen Rant at SXSW that, "[Season 5] actually is a very complete story that has the benefit of also feeling like it's about endings." Paramount+ also let Discovery return for extra filming to create "a coda" that wraps up the series in a "satisfying" way, according to Kurtzman.

Star Trek: Discovery's final two episodes are a two-part ending directed by Jonathan Frakes and Olatunde Osunsanmi, respectively.

Star Trek: Discovery is a cosmic show with galactic stakes, but at its core, the series is about the deep relationships among the crew of the USS Discovery. Led by Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), Discovery's crew is a found family. Meanwhile, there are several romantic relationships, from Burnham and Cleveland Booker (David Ajala), to Captain Saru (Doug Jones) and President T'Rina (Tara Rosling), to the marriage between Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz) and Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp).
