Bo Welch is a multi-talented Academy-award-winning American filmmaker, actor, director and production designer famous, for his works in the “Men in Black” franchise, the 1990 fantasy romance movie “Edward Scissorhands,” and many other productions.

Age, Early Life, and Education Background

Born Robert W. ‘Bo’ Welch III under the Sagittarius zodiac sign on 30 November 1951, in Yardley, Pennsylvania USA, he’s 61 years old as of 2022. He hasn’t revealed the names of his parents, nonetheless, it is believed that his father worked as a firefighter, while his mother was a cashier at an unnamed supermarket. He was raised alongside his sister Elizabeth Levinson.

When he began expressing an interest in acting, Welch’s parents encouraged him to focus on his education He went to a local high school, and was very physically active as a student – he played soccer and basketball until he matriculated in 1969. Directing and Acting Career

Welch made his directing debut in 2000, when he worked on the episode “Fail-Safe” of the acclaimed TV series “Secret Agent Man”, before he directed two episodes – “Arthur Needs Space” and “The Big League” – of the sitcom “The Tick,” which premiered on Fox Network on 8 November 2001. 2003 saw him directing the family comedy movie “The Cat in the Hat”, but it wasn’t well-received by the audience. His latest directing roles came between 2017 – 2019, when he worked on five episodes of the drama TV show “A Series of Unfortunate Events.”

Bo has acted in three films only, making his debut in 2002 with a minor role in the acclaimed action-adventure film “Men in Black II”, and appeared in “Men in Black 3” ten years later. He also played the role of The Father in the Thomas Leisten Schneider-directed 2015 comedy movie “Tiebreaker,” which starred Phil Eastman, and follows the story of two related tennis players.

1983 saw Bo work on his first project, the Donald Wrye-directed drama movie “Heart of Steel”, before he contributed to the 1986 romantic film “Violets are Blue,” which starred Bonnie Bedelia, Kelvin Kline and Sissy Spacek. In the same year, he worked on the crime movie “Stark: Mirror Image” and the Matthew Chapman-directed film “Slow Burn,” which starred Johnny Depp, Beverly D’Angelo,and Eric Roberts,  then on the horror comedy film “The Lost Boys” in the year that followed.

Welch rose to prominence for his role in the acclaimed 1988 fantasy comedy film “Beetlejuice,” which starred Michael Keaton, Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin. In 1989, he contributed to the making of the Golden Globe-winning fantasy comedy movie “Ghostbusters II”, and in the year that followed, he came in as the production designer of the fantasy film “Edward Scissorhands,” which received many positive reviews, in addition to winning nine awards including a BAFTA. Bo’s praised skills as a production designer has seen him receive many award nominations; his contribution to the drama film “The Color Purple” earned him a nomination for an Academy Award in 1985. He bagged a BAFTA award for Best Production Design for the film “Edward Scissorhands”, and was also nominated for the Awards Circuit Community Award in 1992 for the film “Batman Returns”, and an Academy Award for Best Art Direction in the family drama “A Little Princess.” Bo won a Los Angeles Film Critics Association in 1996, and has been nominated for many other awards – his latest is a Saturn Award for his production design works in the film “Thor.”

Personal Life

Bo is married to Catherine O’Hara – they first met during the shooting of the film “Beetlejuice” in 1988 – O’Hara portrayed Delia Deetz in the film, and Welch was the production designer. When during an interview he was asked to describe their first meeting, Bo recalled, ‘My memories of “Beetlejuice” are very fond, of course…Not to mention, I met my wife, who was in it.’ Bo has revealed that it was the director of “Beetlejuice,” Tim Burton who encouraged the duo to go on a date, and they fell in love shortly afterwards. They soon relocated to Los Angeles together, and Bo and Catherine eventually walked the aisle on 25 April 1992. They welcomed their first son, Matthew in 1994 and a second son they named Luke three years later.

Catherine was previously dating the (later) “Schitt’s Creek” star Eugene Levy before she met her future husband. Their romance blossomed on the set of “Schitt’s Creek”, in which she played his wife and the mother of his real-life children, which led to many believing that they were real husband and wife. However, their relationship was short-lived, and Levy ended up marrying Deborah Divine in 1977.
