When the erotic period film A Chinese Torture Chamber Story became a box office hit in Hong Kong, producer Wong Jing quickly brought back star Yvonne Yung and co-writer Cheuk Bing for Sex and the Emperor. Another wild (and likely fictional) take on the scandalous lives of Chinese royalty, Sex and the Emperor follows the sexual escapades of Qing Dynasty emperor Tongzhi, whose death at 18 years old was rumored to have been caused by sexually transmitted diseases. Yung plays Guilian, a gorgeous chambermaid that catches Tongzhi's affections and is later sent into a brothel run by a powerful madam. In the tradition of the category III period erotic genre, Sex and the Emperor breaks down genre borders, offering up lowbrow sexual humor as often as it offers grotesque scenes of over-the-top gore. The result may not be a film of refined taste, but it is not to be missed by any fan of the genre!
