Jessica and Jake are in love and entering their senior year of high school. Their only problem--Jake's ex-girlfriend and Jessica's ex-best friend Tegan. Against Jessica's better judgment, they attend a back to school party at Tegan's house and things get out of hand, a live stream of an event goes wrong and when everyone wakes up the next day, Tegan is missing and no one knows (or will admit to knowing) what happened to her. The police begin their investigation and everyone is hiding something. Will they find Tegan dead, alive, or at all?
This book has some great twists and some very astute observations about sexual assault. It is very rare that there is a male victim of sexual assault portrayed in a novel, and the narrative gives a lot of food for thought about how it could (and does) happen. I thought that the thread involving this subject was surprising and intriguing.
As I had mentioned in one of my updates, some of what happens along the way in this book was just ridiculous and made me round down my rating. There's one instance where Jake has just beat someone up and is on the run because the police have been called, and yet he encounters Jessica in the woods and they get naked and hook up in a shed. Really?
Other than a few eye rolling moments, the mystery proceeds at a brisk pace and nothing is fully answered until the end. There are definitely a few surprises and some of the characters are not as they appear on the surface. I listened to this as an audiobook and it is a full cast narration, which is great for keeping straight who is narrating. The narrators were all excellent and different.
If you like a well-told YA mystery, this is a great choice.
FRIENDS LIKE THESE is a fast-paced story about high school friends and their enemies that are out to destroy them. I usually avoid young adult fiction that centers around angsty high schoolers. But Jennifer's way with words always pulls me into their obnoxious world of teenage naivety. Written with multiple POVs, Jessica, Jake, and Tegan unfailingly drove me mad. I didn't trust any of the characters—so much dishonesty circled that you couldn't believe what you heard. After the whole situation at Tegan's party, Jake and Jessica were all over the place. Jake had narcissistic qualities, while Jessica was pudding in his hands. There were times I thought, what in the heck are they doing!?
Even though the suspense mostly sustained its speed, it started to falter by the finale. There were a lot of repetitive circumstances that ruined the general flow. I had an open-mouthed reaction to the twist, but I didn't jump up and down joyfully. If you're looking for a quick read with a light-hearted whodunnit mystery, FRIENDS LIKE THESE might be for you. I still prefer Jennifer's previous novel, LIES LIKE WILDFIRE, but I'm still a fan of her remarkable writing, and I’m looking forward to seeing what she comes up with next!
My Rating: 3.5
I am a little embarrassed to admit how compulsively I read this book. I didn't guess ahead for the few twists, but they kept the ball rolling -- speeding -- toward that satisfying finish.
I do have to ask if anyone else found it strange that the characters kept mentioning "my stomach loosened" or "my bladder loosened". It happened a lot, like A LOT, in this book. It made me giggle in a couple places, because first his stomach loosened (whatever that means), then in the next paragraph his stomach tightened. I get that upsetting circumstances have very real physical effects, but I'd love to know where all this stomach, bladder, and throat loosening, and then tightening, came from. Is "loosening" some new way of describing upset I've not heard until now?
"Whatever happens next, stay away. You don't need friends like these."
This is a great, twisty, mystery filled with teenagers, secrets, and some heavy topics that are handled well. I've got five great reasons for why you should be sure to read Friends Like These:
1. The book hits so many great notes, combining a high school drama, with a dangerous party, secrets, friendships, romance, machinations, and a death that no one saw coming. It reads like a well-executed teen drama tv show, and I enjoyed it from start to finish.
2. Every character seems suspicious and has secrets, which all of them interesting. The author weaves a great web of doubts and questions...who did what, and who knows what, and why?
3. The book is written with dual POV, plus narration from an important missing character before the events of the book. All these viewpoints give you a more complex picture of the story and help the reader engage with the characters.
4. It is quick paced and bingeable. I would have read it in one sitting if my kids didn't keep needing me for things.
5. Best of all, the book keeps you guessing until the end!

sexual contents, alcohol, drugs and teen drama... Gina Clabo
The story involves one of the main characters disappearing without a trace from the end-of-summer party. Because of the circumstances and personalities involved, I was never sure if they were actually missing or just hiding out, although all indications were the former. There were more than a few alternatives for the disappearance and several possible suspects, depending on which scenario was the right one. I never guessed the truth until it was actually revealed.
The main characters' backstories vary, but all are affected by their pasts and past relationships. There are so many pivotal moments during the story's events where had a different choice been made at any point, what happened at the party never would have occurred. This was very much a 'perfect storm' of a story.
In addition to a missing person case and a murder, the book explores drug-assisted sexual assault within its unique plot. Some very important points are demonstrated, and though the hook is the story's drama, readers of all ages can learn something from what some characters do and what happens to others.
FRIENDS LIKE THESE was a thrilling story I didn't want to put down, and I recommend it to readers who enjoy YA mystery fiction or thrillers.
I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving an Advanced Review Copy from the author or publisher through "NetGalley" and "TBR and Beyond Book Tours."
I appreciated that not only did the book have fast-paced, intriguing drama, it also had characters that I loved. Told in multiple Point of Views, it mostly focuses on the two main characters: Jessica and Jake. Both are compelling characters, but I really loved Jake, in particular, because he was so nuanced and complex...something I don't often see in YAs. Jennifer Alvarez doesn't hide the good, bad, or ugly from the reader, and it makes her scenario feel hauntingly real. Her plots (am thinking of Lies Like Wildfire) could happen to anyone, given the circumstances she lays out, and that's what I love about them.
The twists in this story keeps you guessing the whole way. I didn't see the ending coming, and it was a great and shocking one. There are many twists throughout, not just at the end. It's hard to write a review without giving away information, but I can honestly say this grabbed me and didn't let go and each new bit of information had me flipping pages. I think that teens (and adults) who enjoy thrillers and mysteries will love this book.
1. Genre - Who doesn’t love a whodunit? But when you add in teens/young adults, the abuse of alcohol, broken friendships, and revenge plots… it creates the perfect combination for a book.
2. Social Media - Not to say that I’m not addicted to my social media (lol #bookstagram), but the characters in this book live and breathe their online personas and how many follows/likes they get. To the extreme that choices are made that can never be taken back.
3. Characters - The MC, all her friends AND frenemies are relatable. They can be empathized with, but they also have extreme personality traits that create chaos, make even small situations life or death and its so interesting to see how it all unfolds.
4. Writing Style - The book is so easy to get into, I read it in one sitting. I was entrenched in the mystery, in the jealousy & anger, in the hurt. Alvarez does a phenomenal job of making a YA story so captivating without making it too juvenile for a grown woman like me.
5. The “twist” - As I read, I was trying to figure out the bad guy of the story. Without spoiling anything…I was wrong, but also not. It was a bunch of small moments and small choices that allowed every piece of the puzzle to connect seamlessly.

This had me hooked almost immediately! The anticipation is really well done. I wanted to flip to the end because I just couldn’t wait to find out what the heck happened?! I thought I had it figured out but I was wrong (and I love when that happens).
This is told in alternating chapters between 3 of the main characters. I really sympathized with all of them. Who hasn’t made mistakes in high school without wholeheartedly understanding the consequences? I thought Tegan was awful to both Jake and Jessica but her chapters really helped humanize her. I’m glad we got to see things from her point of view as well.
I really enjoyed this one and, if you are into YA thrillers set in sleepy Northern California beach towns (yay Sonoma county), you will too!
When they arrive at Teegans end of summer party, things are already a bit tense as parties aren't Jessicas idea of a good time, especially if it's Teegans. They have this used-to-be-friends rivalry thing going on, that has gotten even worse since Jake dumped Teegan and started dating Jessica.
Then some horrible things go down at the party and Teegan ends up missing, opening up a can of worms that has the police and FBI arriving in town. This makes everyone nervous as they all have secrets they want to keep from the days leading up to and from the night of the party. This story took me on a wild ride, and while I had some very strong suspicions about what happened to Teegan and who was behind what happened at the party I was 100% wrong. I did not see it coming at all. I loved it.
