Finally watched Truth or Dare (2017). Here's a better ending ~

Discussion

Edit: Truth or Dare (2018 NOT 2017). Blumhouse one. Didn't realize the typo

Finally got around to watching it. Movie was serviceable but really disliked the ending.

Here's my idea: (spoilers obviously)

Movie ends with 3 players right? Markie, Olivia and Demon. Olivia asks the Demon, it chooses truth and says there's no way out.

Olivia realises something. Once Markie is unpossessed, she tells her to continue trusting her, all the way to the end. She tells her that the Demon chose truth, and for Markie to pick truth as well. When it's her turn, answer it before asking the Demon again. She'll know what to do from there.

Markie says she trusts her and asks Olivia "What're you doing?"

Olivia says, "Choosing you". And shoots herself in the head.

Markie screams no, cries and the Demon possesses Olivia to ask Markie truth or dare. Markie picks truth and the Demon asks "Who do you really blame for your dad's death?".

Markie breaks down, "I want to blame Olivia, I do. But the truth is, I blame myself. I've known for a long time my dad was going through a dark time but I was too busy with myself that I didn't do anything. He always kept a strong front for my sake and I always wonder if I had just taken one day, one minute even, to check in on him, he would still be with me. It was me, I killed my dad."

This reinforces that Markie is suffering from survivors guilt, explains (but not justify) her self destructive behaviour of constant cheating, suicidal thoughts and does away with how the movie just dropped the "Olivia's fault" plot point.

Because this is the truth, Markie passes. Remembering what Olivia said, she then asks the Demon - Truth of Dare?

The demon tries to choose truth but because 2 truths have already been said (Demon & Markie), and with Olivia "skipping" her turn, the Demon now has to pick dare.

Finally realising what Olivia meant, Markie says "that's not how the game works".

The Demon is forced to pick dare and Markie gets the horror movie finishing one-liner; "I dare you to go the fuck back to hell!".

The Demon is forced back and the game ends, with Markie surrounded by the bodies of her loved ones, the lone survivor of the game.

This ending gives Markie some depth, has a "outsmart the monster" with Chekhov's Gun moment and makes for a bittersweet ending where the character with the "least" reason to live gets to live but experiences survivors guilt again.

Tldr: Main characters outsmart the Demon by sacrificing themselves, win but with a bittersweet ending.

Yes, i loved the movie but hated the ending. Yours is exactly what i thought would happen and was disappointed in the real ending.

“Better”

Just because you didn’t like it doesn’t mean yours is any better. And I’ve never seen the movie.
