Students lauded for their funny stories in Leacock competition

The three winners are invited to attend the Meet the Authors, and Student Showcase event to be held in Orillia in June

The Stephen Leacock Associates are pleased to announce the winners of their 2024 Student Humorous Short Story Competition.

Winner:
Port and Starbucks
Written by Sylvie Potje, University of Waterloo

Runners up:
Twintuition
Written by Iris Matthews, Bear Creek Secondary School, Barrie.

War, Sports and Massage Parlours
Written by Marcus DiCerbo, Carleton University, Ottawa.

The winner will receive $1,500 and each of the two runners-up will receive $750.

Honourable mentions, in alphabetical order, are:

3 Course Meal of Struggle, Tears and Endless Madness by Chiara Alfinito, University of Guelph.

The Fateful Apology by Ellery Bowman, Korah Collegiate and Vocational School, Sault Ste. Marie.

Stephen Leacock Associates congratulates all the winners and those who received an honourable mention. The writing this year was of a high calibre, and the judges were once again seriously challenged in choosing the top three. 

The three winners are invited to attend the "Meet the Authors, and Student Showcase" event on June 21, 2024 where they will read their essays and receive their prizes. Each winner will receive two tickets for this event, and the first place winner will also receive two tickets for the Gala Dinner on June 22 at which the winner of the 2024 Leacock Medal for Humour will be announced. 

This year, the host for the "Meet the Authors" event will be Terry Fallis, two-time winner of the Leacock Medal in 2008 and 2015.  Steve Patterson, host of CBC's The Debaters, will be the host for the Gala Dinner.  Tickets to both these events may be purchased online by the general public.

All entrants are encouraged to participate in this worthwhile competition next year.  Submissions are accepted from mid-December to mid-April, with the winners being announced in mid-May.  More details about the competition are given online
