Biography
They released their self-titled debut album Danzig on Rubin's Def American in 1988. The new sound they developed for their debut effort, heavy blues rock topped with Danzig's distinctive vocal style and dark brooding atmosphere, would come to be the band's signature sound for the most critically acclaimed part of their career. They recorded three more studio albums in similar style over the next six years, all of which were well received. But by 1994 the original lineup was starting to crumble.
During a summer tour in support of their fourth album (aptly titled 4), Biscuits quit the band over a royalties disagreement. He was soon replaced by drummer Joey Castillo. Christ, reportedly unhappy with his lack of creative input in the band, left in July of 1995. Von followed suit, leaving Danzig the only remaining member of the original lineup. The relationship with Rubin and his label had also cooled down considerably by this point, and Danzig soon severed the ties completely.
He went on to record the fifth album titled 5: Blackacidevil largely by himself, though still featuring Castillo on drums as well as some session guitar work by Jerry Cantrell (of Alice in Chains fame). No longer bound by Rubin's will he was finally in full creative control and able to experiment as he saw fit. This resulted in a radical departure from the signature heavy blues rock sound that was established on the first four releases, instead favouring a more industrial approach with a large emphasis on electronics. Even the vocals were not left untouched and were buried under a layer of distortion. The album was released in 1996 but was heavily criticized and poorly received by fans, many of whom were unhappy with the drastic change in sound.
For the next few years the band would continue to have a revolving door lineup and in 1999 released 6:66 Satans Child, still sporting the industrial stylings of the previous album, albeit slightly more well received this time. In 2000 the lineup would stabilize for a while with the addition of Todd Youth on guitar and Howie Pyro on bass. With this lineup they recorded 777 - I Luciferi, released in 2002, which saw the band drop the electronics and return to a more rock based sound.
After yet more lineup changes they released Circle of Snakes in 2004, this time featuring guitarist Tommy Victor who had previously been a touring member of the band as well as Bevan Davies on drums and Jerry Montano on bass. The next few years were mainly spent touring, during which the band again had a variety of (touring) lineups which included drummer Johnny Kelly and guitarist Kenny Hickey, both of Type O Negative fame.
2007 saw the band release The Lost Tracks of Danzig, a double-disc compilation album featuring previously unreleased tracks from recording sessions spanning their entire career.
