Meanwhile Nicholas and his simple friend Smike have left Vincent Crummles's company of strolling players and set out for London after receiving a note that Kate is in danger.
As Nicholas hurries back he overhears a conversation in a restaurant.
A stranger is talking about Kate in most familiar and uncomplimentary terms. Nicholas demands to know the man's name: but the stranger refuses. Nicholas follows him to his private cab, but is struck by a whip. The horse rears up, whinnying in terror, and gallops off. Seconds later the coach crashes and overturns.
For a moment Nicholas hesitates, then takes to his heels...

Through French eyes
On September 15, 1940, when the Battle of Britain was at its height, the Royal Air Force claimed its greatest victory and two days later Hitler postponed his plans for the invasion of England. This French programme, using film from both British and German sources, tells the story of one of the most decisive battles of the Second World War.
