The story was well laid out. My biggest concern was the horrid grammar. I get the lower class grammar’ but the hyphenated words just make it sluggish. I am not sure if I want to read this author’s work again. Otherwise, pretty good.

A good historical murder mystery by a great author.
I first read this book years ago when it first came out.
I have been unable to find copies, and then found them on kindle and brought it.
It's just as much fun as I remember and Sergeant Cribb is just as entertaining.
If you like the Murdoch Mysteries, then I would recommend Sergeant Cribb .

I read the book in 2 sittings and all the time hoping the characters would develop more or the arena would be detailed more. I found it difficult at tines to visualize the scene and why certain behaviors were there. The most interesting character for me is the doctor and his quirkiness but he's like a side note. You don't really understand Mrs Darrell's motives or pretty much anything about her husband, Mr Darrell other than he aggressively trained for the race. The rivalry between him and Sgt. Chadwick was as if it should be understood before I read the book and wasn't truly explained in this book. It is an unusual event that takes place in an interesting time in the world, I did find myself rooting for the little doctor guy so he did keep me reading to the end.

I am a fervent admirer of Mr Lovesey's 'Peter Diamond' books but was disappointed with 'Wobble to Death'. The supposed main character Sgt Cribb was not defined as well as Diamond is and came across as rather 2-dimensional, in fact his assistant PC Thackeray was better. I did not find the plotting as enthralling as Mr Lovesey's other books.
However, cannot wait until next month when the latest Peter Diamond is delivered to my Kindle.
