Cambridge University Press is the proud winner of the Impact Award at this year's IPG Independent Publishing Awards. Jenny Mathias, Global Marketing and Operations Director, from Cambridge University Press accepted the award at a ceremony in London on 24 April 2024.

The Impact Award recognises Cambridge’s commitment to inclusive publishing through its Cambridge Open Equity Initiative.  When shortlisting the judges said Cambridge “has seen the inequalities and barriers to academic publishing… it’s doing good things to make research output more diverse and equitable.”

Our commitment to inclusive publishing

The Impact Award recognises Cambridge’s commitment to inclusive publishing through its Cambridge Open Equity Initiative. When shortlisting the judges said Cambridge “has seen the inequalities and barriers to academic publishing… it’s doing good things to make research output more diverse and equitable.”

The Cambridge Open Equity Initiative seeks to break down barriers for academic authors, especially in low- and middle-income countries where research funding is difficult to obtain. Cambridge developed and launched a new concept of collective funding that enables authors in over 5,000 institutions globally to publish their research open access – which means it is freely accessible online.

Collaboration was key to developing a new model that would allow authors in more than 100 countries to benefit from the scheme. In partnership with more than 20 institutions, in the first six months alone, we’ve accepted more than 100 submissions and published over 70 articles by authors from more than 30 low- and middle- income countries.

Mandy Hill, Managing Director of Cambridge University Press said: “We’re incredibly proud to have won the Impact Award for our Cambridge Open Equity Initiative. We aren’t just adapting to the changes in our industry, we’re leading the change to increase the impact of our research and ensure equity during the transition to the open access model.

“We know that open access articles are more read and more cited than in paywalled publications. But while we increase equity for readers of that research, we have to guard against inequity for authors.”

The prestigious awards are run by the Independent Publishers Guild (IPG) and recognise the remarkable success of the UK’s independent publishing sector. Congratulations to all the other shortlisted and winning organisations.  You can read more about the winners of the 2024 Independent Publishing Awards.
