IPL 2024: David Warner equals Chris Gayle's world record with rapid fifty vs CSK

Delhi opener David Warner equalled Chris Gayle's world record of most fifty-plus scores in T20 cricket. Warner's rapid half-century against Chennai at the Dr. Y.S.Rajashekar Reddy Stadium on Sunday, 31 March, helped him to reach his 110th fifty-plus score in the format. Warner hit his fifty in just 32 balls to equal the elusive record of the legendary Caribbean batter.

On the day, Warner was on top of the CSK bowlers in the Indian Premier League from the very start of the innings. The batter reached his fifty in the 9th over of the match, in just 32 balls. Warner's incredible onslaught along with Prithvi Shaw's support act helped Delhi race away to 90 runs in the first nine overs of the game.

David Warner was off the blocks early against CSK. The batter put the pedal to the metal in the fifth over of the game and hit Deepak Chahar for three back to back big shots. If that was not enough, Warner and Shaw combined and tore into Mustafizur Rahman in the final over of the powerplay. Mustafizur went for 20 runs in that over which shifted the momentum of the match.

The duo put up 93 runs together for the opening partnership, Delhi's most successful one in this season so far. Warner was dismissed in the 10th over of the match when he tried to reverse lap Mustafizur Rahman. Warner connected the shot well, but Matheesha Pathirana - standing at short third man took a sensational catch to break the partnership.

After the dismissal of Warner, Delhi were put in a little bit of a slump. The team's run-rate of 10 had come down and at the time of writing, they were 121/2 in 13.1 overs. Mitchell Marsh and Rishabh Pant were in the crease after two quick dismissals of Warner and Shaw.
