Some SST records
Some friends and I were talking about influential record labels, ones that became a mark of quality. North American independent music has a bunch of these: Alternative Tentacles, Touch and Go, Dischord, Fringe Product, BYO….but..
My choice for best US independent label is the mighty SST!
Founded by Greg Ginn and Chuck Dukowski to release the first single by their band Black Flag. That was SST 001, “Nervous Breakdown”, 1979. They went on to release seminal classics by groundbreaking bands of the hardcore punk underground. SST 002 was the Minutemen’s first 7”!
Descendents, Saccharine Trust, Meat Puppets, Dinosaur Jr, Würm, Screaming Trees, Gone, Hüsker Dü…the list goes on.
