Indications/Uses
Long-term contraception in women >18 yr. Short-term contraception to cover specific periods when awaiting partner's vasectomy to become effective; sterilization; immunization against rubella to become effective. Contraception in adolescents >12 yr if there is compelling reason & other methods are unsuitable or unacceptable. Safe for women w/ HIV or on antiretroviral therapy.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Administer as a single IM inj into the buttock or upper arm every 12 wk. Administer 1st inj during the 1st 5 days of a normal menstrual cycle. In partners of men undergoing vasectomy, administer 2nd inj 12 wk after the 1st inj if sperm count has not fallen to zero. Postpartum: If not breast-feeding, administer inj w/in 5 days postpartum. If breast-feeding, administer initial inj no sooner than 6 wk postpartum. Switching from OCs: Administer 1st inj w/in 7 days of taking the last active pill.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Patients w/ history of or current hormone-dependent cancer of the breast or genital organs; abnormal uterine bleeding; liver disease; HTN; diabetes for >20 yr; history of ischemic heart disease (eg, MI) or stroke; history of or current arterial thrombosis; acute DVT or pulmonary embolism; SLE. Pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Use w/ caution in the puerperium. Increased risk of heavy or prolonged vag bleeding if immediately used following childbirth or termination of pregnancy. Not indicated before menarche. Concomitant use w/ medicines eg, steroids, antiepileptics, thyroid hormones, aminoglutethiamide, anticoagulants. Caution in patients w/ migraine headaches; diabetes or a family history of diabetes; severe pain or swelling in the calf; blood clotting disorders eg, blood clot in the legs, lung or a stroke; problems w/ eyesight eg, sudden partial or complete loss of vision or double vision; depression; heart disease or cholesterol problems including any family history; abnormal pregnancy; asthma; epilepsy. Potential inj site reactions eg, inj site necrosis & atrophy, abscess formation at inj site. Risk of depression or depressed mood; lower bone mineral density; breast cancer especially in older women; wt gain. Interference w/ cervical smear test results. Does not protect against HIV infection eg, AIDS & other sexually transmitted infections. Contains methyl paraben & propyl paraben. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Patients w/ hepatic &/or renal insufficiency. Lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Nervousness; headache; stomach pain or discomfort; increased or decreased wt. Depression; decreased libido; dizziness; feeling sick; feeling bloated; hair loss; acne; back pain; vag discharge; breast tenderness; difficult or painful period; UTI; oedema/fluid retention; weakness.
