91% Tomatometer 11 Reviews 90% Audience Score 100+ Ratings The Borgias, led by patriarch Rodrigo, are a family of outsiders from Spain who try to take over control of Renaissance-era Italy. Through the use of bribery, extortion and torture, Rodrigo rises up the ranks to become pope. Two of Rodrigo's children are used as pawns by being married off to members of rival families at a young age. Vanozza, Rodrigo's long-time mistress and mother of his children, and Giulia Farnese battle for the elder Borgia's affections. The story of the Borgias has inspired such works as Machiavelli's political treatise "The Prince" and Mario Puzo's "The Godfather." Read More Read Less Watch on Fandango at Home Buy Now

      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

The Vatican's resident schemers have a renaissance of their own in an improved sophomore season, with a more intriguing focus on political machinations both within the Catholic Church and the Borgias family.

Sam Wollaston Guardian It's very silly, of course. And quite a lot of fun. And most probably spot on, historically. Dec 28, 2018 Full Review Ben Lawrence Daily Telegraph (UK) The Borgias rattles along with lashings of sex and violence and some pretty clunky dialogue. Rated: 2.5/5 Dec 28, 2018 Full Review Les Chappell AV Club Doesn't dispel the problems of the first season, but it does feel like Jordan and company are getting closer to that better version of the show. It's lighter on the relationship drama and heavier on political elements. Rated: B Dec 28, 2018 Full Review Dani Bradford TV Equals It is good to have the lewd and mischievious papal family back. Although Jeremy Irons is a favorite in his role as the Borgia patriarch, I am partial to Francois Arnaud as Cesare, despite his incestual leanings. Dec 28, 2018 Full Review Dan Forcella TV Fanatic The Borgias' second season premiere set the table for what could be a very fun spring. Rated: 4/5 Dec 28, 2018 Full Review Mark A. Perigard Boston Herald The cast -- particularly Irons and Arnaud -- seem comfortable in the Borgia robes. Dec 28, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Mary H Fantastic from start to finish Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/06/21 Full Review Audience Member schemes and death war battle etc this season ups everything Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member The political intrigues are far more interesting and the archetype characters feel more fleshed out this season as opposed to their introductions in the first season. The battle for the papacy has ended and creates a personal and unique take on the Pope's family. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Take the acting from the first season and increase it tenfold. Holliday Grainger, Jeremy Irons, Francois Arnoud put out the most impressive acting I will likely ever see on the small screen. The directing and costumes have also taken steps in the right direction. This show has really come into its own in this season. The Beautiful Deception and The Confession are the standouts for this season. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
