A sub for all things Titanic - the ship, the history, and of course, the numerous films.

What's this about a giant squid attacking the sub?

I was watching the news on TV and one pundit said it was possible that the submersible was attacked by a giant squid because giant squid live in that region and at that depth. Any truth to this theory?

Things like this is what happens when you try to do live updates on a slowly evolving story.

Media is putting out literally any fluff they can until next update.

They've run out of shit to talk about since they covered both the history of the sub and the titanic in just the last few hours.

They've also shown that location map on 4-5 different "updates"

Completely agree, obviously the "OceanGate makes use of ELON MUSK'S StarLink for internet! What could have gone wrong with the network?" angle of the story has run out of clickbait steam.. next, onto sea monsters...

I eagerly await this evenings "UNIDENTIFIED LIGHTS IN THE SKY OFF THE COAST OF NEWFOUNDLAND! UFO ABDUCTION??!" headlines... sigh..

That's already happened. Someone in another sub was saying some idiot being interviewed has already brought up "maybe a giant squid grabbed the ship"

This is my go to info. The mother ship darting around trying to find the sub. Once it stops moving we will probably know more

I mean It’s possible.

This is exactly how we ended up with things like the Olympic switch conspiracy, Egyptian mummies and JP Morgan assassinating competitors.

There's no new news, no new stories, so they make up a bunch of nonsense that people eat up.

I heard the JP Morgan theory what’s the Mummy theory?

There was a whole thing about an Egyptian mummy being in the ships cargo going from the London Museum to Chicago I think, doesn’t matter it wasn’t real of course and there was no “mummy’s curse” on the ship.

I mean I’ll take it.

Would make a horribly cheese B movie!

Probably exists knowing how money hungry people are…

A giant squid attack makes the story more interesting, I guess.

WHERE ARE THE MODS

I think it’s real. They live in tight cold places in the deep sea. The sub vessel looks yummy and it’s full of humans, why wouldn’t it eat them? It’s probably munching on their bones as we speak. Do some research and you will see giant squids have been documented near the Newfoundland waters.

Someone added a humorous and fake line to Wikipedia and everything by else is citogenesis

It happened in a Peter Benchley novel from 1991 called BEAST. It is about a real type of squid callled "Architeuthis dux" wreaking havoc in Bermuda. Yes the book is fictional, but that type of squid does exist. Obviously everyone wants these people to be found alive, but the squid thing would be interesting.

I know this sounds far fetched but it could be a possibility. I really hope they are found and if they are then they are most likely dead at this point, however it would still be closure to see that the sub is found. To me though its insane that the sub notified the emergency 8 hours after it happened? I can't wrap my head around it. I hate the sea so this would be my worst nightmare.

yes but no. giant squid have been known to attack subs and boats before but never bringing them down. the giant squid does live in that area and at that depth. the giant squid can grow up to around 40 ft for females (12-13m) and 33 ft for males (10 m), while the submersible was only 22 ft. debris from the sub was found in the area but they heard no sounds of impact from the debris from the titanic before they lost signal. they also entered the are of the titanic from a point where there was little to no debris from the titanic itself. the sub was also meant to last 96 hours for 5 people so the possibility of them running out of oxygen is not likely. i hope this helps...

Giant squid has only been captured on camera in its natural habitat twice in all of history.

Also it CANNOT attack a boat, as its whole body is adapted to living in deep sea and would only come up to the surface when it’s extremely sick and dying.

So no, giant squid has never been known to attack a subs and boats. They are the most elusive creatures on the planet.

However, recently scientists learnt that giant squid is an aggressive ferocious hunter so there is a possibility that it might attack a subs if its think the sub is its prey… I wouldn’t be going into anything that may resemble the shape of whale or shark from now on.

Octopuses are very smart, they've even been to open yours to get treats inside Imagine something much bigger and stronger

Who's to say the squid didn't figure out how to rip open that submarine and get the "treats" inside
