Panteon Rococo is a Mexican ska band that originated in 1995. The band originated in response to the Mexican peso crisis and the emergence of the EZLN (Ejercito Zapatista de Liberacion Nacional) during the presidential period of Ernesto Zedillo. The band characterized itself from the beginning by their use of music to critic social issues and by their support to leftist movements. Panteon Rococo’s lyrics tend to give a new edge to social conscience; they provide a fighting soul and collective work to their message of social justice. Panteon Rococo started in the streets; their first performances took place in underground bars, street rallies and parties. After a short time the band became known because of its distinct rhythm and their reputation as a politically conscious band started to grow as well. Even though Panteon Rococo is known as a ska band, their music fuses several genres, such as reggae, punk, rock and cumbia. Ska is a music genre that originated in Jamaica. It is characterized by a fast and marked rhythm as well as the predominant sound of wind instruments. The fusion of different music genres was part of the origins of ska; one of its precursors is R&B, which along with other music styles evolved and gave rise to ska music.
